Nor'wester hits Kolkata, neighbouring districts

High wind accompanied by rain affected normal life as a nor'westers swept the city along with several other districts in south Bengal this evening.

The Alipore weather station here recorded squall reaching 80 km per hour speed at 8.05 pm, which was preceded by one that measured 47 km per hour, regional Met director G K Das said.

Moderate rain in different parts of the city and suburbs affected traffic movement inconveniencing people returning home from work.

The districts of West and East Burdwan, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly and West Midnapore were also affected by thundersqualls, Das said.

The rains, however, brought welcome relief to the denizens from the sweltering heat that has been prevailing over south Bengal districts for the past few days.

 

Kolkata recorded the day's highest temperature at 35.5 degrees Celsius, while Bankura (36.5 degrees C), Burdwan (35 degrees C), Digha (34.6 degrees C) and Diamond Harbour (34.5 degrees C) recorded similar weather during the day.
