Heavy rains sloshed northern and eastern states today and inundated parts of Assam even as a woman was killed after being struck by lightning in Uttar Pradesh.
The weatherman has warned of "extremely heavy rains" in Assam and Meghalaya and very heavy rain in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, Bihar and east Madhya Pradesh tomorrow.
Temperatures in the national capital hovered below normal level after rains overnight but high humidity that shot up to 100 per cent added to the discomfort of residents. The city gauged 45.2 mm of rains and recorded the maximum at 35 degrees.
The three other metropolitan cities of Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai recorded the maximum temperature at 28.5, 35.1, 29.8 degrees Celsius, respectively.
More than 80,000 people have been affected by the latest wave of floods in Assam's Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Nagaon and Jorhat districts.
According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority, more than 4,100 hectares of crop have been damaged in the flood in these areas.
The Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger mark at Nematighat in Jorhat and Tezpur in Sonitpur district, Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat and Jia Bharali at NT Road crossing in Sonitpur, it said, adding six temporary bridges were washed away by flood waters in Jorhat.
In Uttar Pradesh, a 30-year-old woman was killed and five were injured in an incident of lightning. Scattered rains were experienced over parts of the state till 8:30 AM. The weatherman warned of heavy rains at isolated places.
The MeT office in Odisha said that due to a low pressure area over south Bihar and neighbourhood, the state will experience rains till July 9.
An IMD bulletin said heavy rains are likely to hit a few places in north Odisha tomorrow.
Haryana and Punjab also reported a drop in the maximum temperatures after rains till 8:30 AM. IMD said both the states are likely to get rains tomorrow.
Heavy showers drenched Gangetic West Bengal even as the weatherman predicted more rains in the state tomorrow.
Sriniketan was the wettest place in the state, receiving 85.2 mm of rains. Darjeeling had 68.5 mm of rainfall, Kolkata 47.5 mm, Bankura 32.6 mm, Asansol 44.8 mm and Burdwan 33.6 mm of precipitation.
Bihar was also hit by heavy rains with Purnea receiving 80.4 mm of rainfall. The temperatures across the state showed a downward trend after heavy rains today.
