Notification issued for polls to four Rajya Sabha seats of JK

The state Election Commission here today issued notification for the biennial polls to four Rajya Sabha seats of Jammu and Kashmir, setting in motion the nomination process for the February 7 polls.

Political parties in the state are yet to name their candidates.

Returning Officer for Biennial Election to the Council of States (Secretary, JK Legislative Assembly) M Ramzan today issued three notices for biennial election for the four seats, an official spokesman said.

The election will be held on February 7 in the premises of JK Legislative Assembly Secretariat between 9.00 AM to 4.00 PM.

The last date for filing of nomination papers is January 28.
 

"The nomination papers may be delivered by a candidate or by any of his proposers to the Returning officer situated in the premises of JK Legislative Assembly Secretariat, Jammu between 11 AM and 3 PM on any day (other than public holiday) not later than Wednesday, January 28," it said.

The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be done on January 29.

The four members whose terms are expiring are Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Saif-ud-Din Soz (February 10) and National Conference (NC) leaders Ghulam Nabi Wani and Mohammad Shafi (February 15).

A member of the Rajya Sabha has a six-year tenure while a Lok Sabha member has a five-year term.
