: Tamil Nadu government today informed Madras High court that the Co-operation, Food and Consumer Protection Department had issued an order on January 4 2016 to set up District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum (DCDRF) at Tiruppur District

A submission to this effect was made by Additional Government pleader V R Kamalanthan before the first bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M M Sundersh on Mar 2.

The matter relates to a PIL by Consumer Rights Association of Tiruppur which submitted that the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, is a socio economic legislation to protect the rights and interest of consumers and to enforce and provide the remedy by a simple inexpensive mechanism and give social justice to the ignorant helpless common people.

The petitioner also submitted that the first and only act of its kind in India has enabled ordinary consumers to secure less expensive and often speedy redressal of their grievances.

The Association stated that the Act mandates the State Government set up Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum in all districts to redress grievances of consumers and provide effective, cheap and speed redressal of grievances.

Though a Separate District Court was formed by the Judiciary Department, Tiruppur, there was no separate DCDRF for the district after formation of a separate district by government

Litigants of Tirupur, an industrial city have been forced to travel to Coimbatore, about 58 km away.

Hence the petitioner moved court foir a direction to the Tamil Nadu government to establish aDCDRF in Tiruppur District.

When the matter came up on March 2, the bench recorded the submission of AGP that government would implement the G.O. within eight weeks and closed the PIL.
