A police jawan allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle in Maoist-hit Bijapur district of southern Chhattisagrh today.

"Assistant constable Firturam Yadav (27), posted with Kutru police station of the district, shot himself with his service rifle," Deputy Superintendent of Police Bijapur Ashok Singh told PTI over phone.

The incident happened when Firturam, a native of Kumharpara close to Kutru police station, was about to go to his home outside his workplace, he said.

The jawan was rushed to a local hospital where he was declared dead, Singh said.

The body was handed over to family members after postmortem.

Yadav was earlier a SPO (special police officer) during Salwa Judum movement and later appointed as assistant constable, the DSP said, adding that the reason for the suicide was not clear and further probe was on.

After Supreme Court rapped Chhattisgarh government for recruiting tribal youths as SPOs during the Salwa Judum days, it recruited them as assistant constables.
