A mob attacked the police and forest workers on an operation to bust illicit quarrying and injured two, including a policeman and set ablaze a jeep of the force in Bihar's Rohtas district today.

Sub-divisional officer Nalin Kumar said the incident took place at Amra Talab village where the quarry owners and their men attacked the police and pelted stones at them.

The protesters also blocked the GT road to prevent the police and the forest workers from going ahead with their work against illicit quarries, he said adding the situation was brought under control after additional reinforcements were called in to drive away the protesters.

The operation was being led by Divisional Forest Officer S Chandrashekhar.

A case has been lodged against unidentified persons for indulging in arson and attacking officials to prevent them from discharging their duties, the SDO said.

The district administration on the direction of the state government had cancelled licences of the crushers and banned quarrying to protect forest and natural resources.
