President Pranab Mukherjee today condoled the loss of lives in the gas leak incident in Ludhiana, in which five people were killed and nearly 200 others fell ill.

"I am saddened to learn about the gas leak tragedy in Punjab's Ludhiana district on Friday night in which several people lost their lives and a large number are hospitalised," he said in his message Punjab Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki.

"Please convey my prayers for the speedy recovery of those hospitalised due to the incident and heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased," he said.

The President said that he is sure that the state government and other agencies are providing all possible aid to those affected by the gas leak as well as to the bereaved families.

Five persons were killed and nearly 200 others fell ill after inhaling ammonia gas which leaked from a gas tanker after it accidentally brushed against a flyover.

The incident occurred on Delhi-Ludhiana highway when the tanker got stuck under a flyover along a canal, about 25-km from Ludhiana.
