Public hearing of NCBC held

The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC), under the chairmanship of Justice V Eswariah, today conducted a public hearing for consideration of inclusion of castes/communities/sub-castes in the Central List of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) for Assam.

The Commission took up for hearing six castes/communities -- Newar (Nepali community), Khound (Tea Garden and Ex-Tea Garden labourers/tribes), Sawar (Tea Garden and Ex-Tea Garden tribes), Rudra Paul, Kiran Sheikh of Barak Valley and Bishnupriya Manipuri.

Justice V Eswaraiah laid down the criteria of social, educational, economic and employment backwardness for inclusion in the Central List of OBCs.

Justice K.N. Saikia, Chairperson, Assam Backward Class Commission was also present in the public hearing.
 

The other members of the Commission included A K Mangotra, A K Saini, S K Kharventhan and Dr Sakeel-uz-Zaman Ansari.
