Residents of the Sai Darshan building in suburban Ghatkopar which collapsed two days ago today met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and demanded strict punishment for the culprits.

An official from the chief minister's office said the residents also told Fadnavis about their rehabilitation requirements.

"The chief minister assured them of all necessary action, and directed the housing department to provide them with temporary shelter," the official said.

Fadnavis had announced in Legislative Council yesterday that the kin of those killed in the incident will be given ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh each.

The residential building collapsed on July 25, killing 17 people.

Police have arrested local Shiv Sena worker Sunil Shitap for carrying out illegal structural changes in his ground-floor flats which allegedly led to the collapse.
