Railways has suffered a loss of over Rs 1,602 crore due to the concession given in passenger fare during 2015-16, Rajya Sabha was told on Friday.
The revenue foregone due to concession in some of major categories, including senior citizens, patients, physically challenged and Izzat scheme in monthly season tickets, in the financial year 2015-16 was Rs 1,602.94 crore, Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain said in a written reply.
Railways provides concession in passenger fare in 24 categories including war widows, press correspondents, awardee teachers, Prime Minister Shram Awardees and President Police Medal awardees among others.
