Punjab government today said it has earmarked Rs 47 crore for distributing more than 1.5 bicycles to girl students of government schools under the Mai Bhaggo Scheme, which will be given within three months.

"The state government has set aside Rs 47 crore for the Mai Bhaggo Scheme under which all girl students of government schools of Class IX to XII will be given bicycles by the Punjab government," a government spokesman said here.

The government has already distributed over 1.11 lakh bicycles to girl students studying in class XI and XII at the cost of Rs 30 crore last year, aimed at promoting education among girls and bring down their dropout rates from schools, he said.

Instructions have been issued to district education officers to prepare list of girl students from class IX to XII for early distribution of bicycles, he added.
