Student commits suicide after school bars him from board exams

Press Trust of India Srinagar

The 16-year-old boy, a student of Public School Baramulla jumped from the second floor of the institution on August 25, minutes after he was informed by the school management that he had failed in the 'golden test' and could not appear in the board examination, police sources said.

The student was rushed in a critical condition to the Soura Medical Institute with severe head injuries. However, he died last night.

After registering a case, police arrested Altaf Hussain Teli, a teacher in the school, for further probe into the matter.

As per the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005, no student can be detained or debarred from taking Class X board examination based on his or her performance in the school test.

'Golden test' is a practice prevalent in most of the private schools across Kashmir valley to detain underperforming students from the annual Class X examinations in an attempt to maintain the high success rate.
