Almost a month after a six-member oversight committee suggested "replacing" the Class 12 history book of the Punjab School Education Board, state Education Minister O P Soni today said students of class 11 and 12 will get reading material of history in the next 15 days.

According to an official release, the decision was taken in a meeting held under the chairmanship of the education minister here.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had in May announced the constitution of the six-member oversight committee to examine the recommendations of the 2014 panel that reviewed the history syllabus and oversee all history books in the future.

The move had come after the Shiromani Akali Dal alleged that a major portion of Sikh and Punjab history had been removed from the Class 12 curriculum.

At the meeting today, Chairperson of the expert committee Kirpal Singh said, "Our youths are not well aware about the distinguished history of Punjab. Therefore, the proposed books should have the content which inspire our younger generation."

It was decided in the meeting that chapter-wise learning material would be provided to the students within 15 days and it would also be uploaded on the board's website.

Soni also assured the expert committee about providing all support so that the history books are printed within the stipulated time.
