The anti-extortion cell of Mumbai police has arrested two associates of gangster Vijay Shetty following a complaint filed by a builder.

Lohit Anchan (35) and Nitesh Rao (25), both residents of suburban Ghatkopar, were arrested yesterday and remanded in police custody by the court today till July 6, police said.

The complainant, a builder operating in an eastern suburb, was getting frequent calls from Vijay Shetty gang demanding ransom. Shetty operates from a foreign country, according to police.

They demanded Rs 1 crore from the builder, threatening to kill him if he didn't pay. "Initially he received threat calls from overseas numbers, but later he started getting calls from local numbers," the police statement said.

Anchan and Rao were arrested when they came to collect the first instalment of ransom. Police also seized seven mobile phones with sim cards among other things from them. Further probe is on.
