A case of abetment has been registered against the boyfriend of a woman police constable who ended her life in Naigaon in Central Mumbai yesterday.

Manju Vasant Gaikwad, attached to the Local Arms Division of Mumbai police, allegedly hanged herself from the ceiling of her house in BDD Chawl in Naigaon, Dadar.

Probe revealed that Gaikwad was under depression as her boyfriend, Mukesh Borge, had refused to marry her, a police official said.

Borge, who lives in the same locality, and Gaikwad were in a relationship since 2014, but he refused to marry her, alleged Pramila Yadav, constable Gaikwad's sister, in her complaint to police.

"On her complaint, we have registered an offence under section 306 of IPC (abetment of suicide)," said senior inspector Dattatray Patil of Bhoiwada police station.

"We are making further enquiries with the woman's friends and family members. We are also checking call data records," Patil said.

Borge would be arrested only if there is any evidence of abetment of suicide, the police officer said.
