Woman set on fire during rape attempt, dies

A 35-year-old woman, who was set on fire during an alleged rape attempt, has succumbed to her injuries, police said today.

The victim, a resident of Pipri village in Bhognipur of neighbouring Kanpur Dehat, died during treatment at a hospital last night, Anoop Yadav, In-charge, Bhognipur police station said.

The woman, a mother of two, was set on fire by her husband's friend on June 25 when she resisted his attempt to rape her, he said.

A complaint in this regard was filed by her husband the following day.

The accused, Dinesh, was arrested two days after the incident, police said, adding that a case under relevant sections of IPC has been registered against him.
