A Software Package To Check Errant Students

BSCAL

A software package developed by a local firm will help schools monitor unruly behaviour of students.

Lyceum, the package, has been already installed by a number of schools in Bangalore, Coonoor and Ooty. According to the company, around 75-80 schools in Bangalore, Mysore, Nilgiris, Mumbai, Delhi and Chandigarh are set to use this software.

PacSoft Solutions Ltd, the company which developed the package, says the software will enable teachers to instantly record unruly behaviour by students for character analysis and correction later.

The idea is to develop the overall personality of a student than merely make him or her just up the grades. This way, even parents will know the root cause of any slip in grades by their children, said Pavan Kumar of PacSoft.

The software covers school admissions, marks card generation, fees collection, student monitoring, library management, payroll, accounting, inventory and many other school specific problems. This software helps a school and colleges computerise every department and gives instant access to any information, he said.

Parents may also feel insecure about schools putting this software for use other than what it was meant for: Donations. Will schools get more savvy about collecting donations from parents? Will it help them assess the paying capacity of parents? Answer to this question might depend to what use the

software is being put to.

PacSoft officials said Lyceum relieves the teachers of from non-teaching activities while the head of the educational institution gets a total insight into the organisation at the touch of a button. It helps avoid manipulation, the officials said.

Priced at Rs 1.05 lakh for the whole package, Lyceum is also available in individual modules as it consists of 15 modules, each designed for one area.

A survey taken by the company has revealed that teachers spend at least 25 per cent of their time on incidental duties like calculation of attendance, totaling marks, writing mark cards and registers, generating rank and roll numbers. They hardly have time to impart quality education or mould the students character, it says.

The head of the institution cannot update parents on their wards performance because the data is not readily available. A teacher requires at least two weeks to prepare cumulative reports of students performance in all exams to work out promotion lists.

Very often calculation errors are detected in the marks cards and attendance statements.

Lyceum helps solve this by generating comprehensive and cumulative report cards and giving unbiased performance appraisal of students, PacSoft says. By reducing human error to minimum and saving a teachers time spent on non-teaching job, students get more individual attention, it adds.
