Aditya Birla Award For Pandit Ronu Majumdar

THE MUMBAI-based Sangit Kala Kendra conferred its 3rd Aditya Birla Kala Kiran Puraskar 1999 on Pandit Ronu Majumdar for flute and Shri Aneesh Pradhan for tabla at a gilttering function here today.

The awards were presented by Padmabhushan Pandit Ram Narayan, who is also the recipient of this year's Aditya Vikram Birla Kalashikhar Puraskar for his life time achievement in Hindustani classical instrumental music.

The annual award is conferred on these two contemporary artists in the field of visual and performing arts and comprises of a cash component of Rs 35,000 each, a scroll of honour and a memento. The award ceremony was followed by a live performance by Pandit Majumdar and a sarod recital by Pandit Ram Narayan who was accompanied by his son Pandit Brij Narayan.

 

The awards were instituted by Sangit Kala Kendra in 1996 in memory of its founder president, late Aditya Vikram Birla.

These awards are given every year to two outstanding artists who are Indian citizens, are 25 to 40 years of age having promising future in their chosen field. The previous recipients have been in the field of visual arts (1997) and classical dance (1998).

, who was a great admirer of the Indian classical arts and was the moving spirit behind the birth and growth of Sangit Kala Kendra.
