In 1994-95, Mumbai port handled a record cargo of 34.05 million tonne. This was also a high for India's 11 major ports. Container-handling records, too, are being set every year with the port handling 5,17,000 Teus (twenty feet equivalent units) last year. The port also posted its highest-ever net surplus of Rs 254.78 crore, a major increase over the 1991-92 figure of Rs 53.24 crore.
