Bjp Candidate Puts Bhajan Lal In A Spot

Sanjeev Gaur BSCAL

Meet the self-styled PhD in politics. He is former Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal. One of the founding fathers of Aya Ram-Gaya Ram brand of politics, he continues to maintain a record in politics: he has never lost an election, from panchayat to Parliament.

Bhajan Lal is the leader of the Congress legislature party in the state assembly, and is now contesting the Karnal Lok Sabha seat. As usual , he is confident that he will win the seat hands down.

However, the reality is a bit different. I D Swami of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who won the seat by over two lakh votes in 1996, enjoys both credibility as well as a clean image.

Swami is a former civil servant, and a Brahmin in the Brahmin-dominated constituency. As expected, the BJP is focussing on Bhajan Lals alleged involvement in corrupt activities, as in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha bribery case.

Bhajan Lal says with a sense of pride: I always fight to win. I have never lost any election in my life. Still, the former Chief Minister is leaving no stone unturned to enter the Lok Sabha.

He is campaigning from early morning till late into the night, moving in towns and villages in a caravan of cars.

Of course, money has never been a problem for him in his four decades-long political career, during which he ruled for13 years in his three innings as chief minister.

Bhajan Lal is also pragmatic to the core. He used to be an ardent admirer of P V Narsimha Rao. Today he adores Sonia Gandhi. He describes chief minister Bansi Lal as a ruthless dictator.

The Haryana Lok Dal (Rashtriya) has fielded Umaid Singh, husband of bandit queen Phoolan Devi, who, by all accounts, is set to lose his deposit.
