Business Worth $10m Generated At Hong Kong Toy Fair

BSCAL

Indias participation in the 23rd Hong Kong toys and games fair last week for the first time resulted in business negotiations for exports valued at $10 million. The fair lasted for four days.

R R Naqvi, executive director, Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council, which sponsored the umbrella participation by the toy manufacturers at the show, said this was a very important launch for India as it figured in a select list of 24 participating countries.

India participated in many product categories like mechanical, electronics, education and creative and soft toys etc. and offered visiting buyers quality products at cheaper rates.

Visitors were informed about the future plans to develop a toy city at Greater Noida near the capital, a press release said.

Many toy companies from Hong Kong and Europe were keen to consider India as an alternate toy manufacturing base in place of China due to better infrastructure and cheaper labour costs, Naqvi said.

Elated by the good response at the Hong Kong fair, Naqvi said Indian companies were ready to participate at the 48th Nuremberg International Toy Fair beginning in February next week.

The Nuremberg toy show is the largest toy fair in the world and is expected to attract 2,000 exhibitors from 52 countries and 55,000 trade buyers from 130 countries.

The Indian delegation will also visit the American international toy fair being held in New York to discuss technology transfer and development of the toy industry in India.

Naqvi said discussions were also on with the Toy Manufacturers Association of America about introducing bachelors degree courses on toy design in training institutes and vocational training programmes in the proposed toy city.
