India yesterday said it did not share the Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaj Sharif's assessment that a war could not be ruled out over Kargil.

There was an unusual calm on the government's side amidst reports that the armed forces had launched a major offensive yesterday against the infiltrators.

The cabinet committee on security, which has been meeting on a daily basis, did not sit yesterday and is slated to review the situation only on Monday.

The only information forthcoming from the official spokespersons was that air strikes had resumed after a gap of two days, the movement of jounalists in the area of operation was banned forthwith.

 

"This is not the assessment that we share," a government spokesman stated yesterday when asked to comment on Sharief's statement as reported in the media. "We continue to hear different voices from across the border. We don't share the assessment that war can not be ruled out," he said.

When asked whether the government would wait for the winters to set in when the infiltrators would be forced to vacate the area, the spokesman said the government had decided to throw the infiltrators out "as soon as possible".
