Exports Of Cotton Textiles Up 30 Per Cent

Cotton textiles export from India has gone up by 30 per cent in US dollar terms in the first quarter of the current annual year, while cotton yarn exports increased by over 50 per cent during the period, according to industry sources.

However, export of cotton piece goods from the organised mill sector declined by 6.3 per cent in terms of the value during the period, sources added.

Export of cotton textiles, including powerloom and knitted cloth, cotton madeups, yarn and sewing thread, between January and March this year fetched Rs 3320.82 crore ($925.54 million) against goods worth Rs 2545.13 crore shipped during the same period last year. In March itself, cotton textiles export witnessed a 30 per cent growth in comparison to March 1996.

 

While Rs 1155.55 crore worth of cotton textiles were exported in March last, during the same period last year, the shipments were worth Rs 837.40 crore, they said.

A significant contribution to the cotton textiles export earnings came from shipment of cotton yarn, in which India has been performing well for the past couple of years. Exports of cotton yarn contributed 47 per cent of the foreign exchange earnings, making up Rs 1566.10 crore. During the same period last year, cotton yarn export earnings were Rs 1012.48 crore. In terms of volume also, cotton yarn exports went up 51 per cent.
