Hinterland Cstar Spread Planned

Joyeeta Dasgupta BSCAL

The Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE) is planning to extend Cstar, its screen-based trading system, outside the city.

The exchange will install a help desk and extend its contingency pool to all towns in West Bengal to market Cstar aggressively.

The bourse had requested member-brokers, who have sub-broker networks outside Calcutta, to set up terminals in smaller towns. However, almost after one month since the announcement, the response from the brokers remains poor.

CSE board members attribute the disinterest to the lacklustre stockmarkets.

The situation is not likely to improve in the short run and the exchange will have to depend on aggressive marketing for expanding the Cstar network, they said. To this effect, CSE has decided to set up help desks in several industrial cities like Asansol, Durgapur, Burdwan and Siliguri. The help desks will educate the investors and help in spreading the equity cult.

The exchange has decided to set up five-eight terminals in each centres and connect them via very small aperture terminals (VSAT).

This will be an extension of the contingency pool in Calcutta and brokers will pay up a fixed amount for using the Cstar terminals.

The Calcutta Stock Exchange members could operate through their sub-brokers using these terminals.

This will, make the system more transparent besides taking Cstar system to investors living outside Calcutta.

The bourse is going ahead with its plans to link-up with the Bombay Stock Exchanges (BSE) BOLT and the terms and conditions will be placed before the next board meeting, said sources.

Besides, it will take part in the interconnected market system, the joint venture of 17 stock exchanges across the country. However, it is yet to be seen the extend of participation and the role CSE will be playing in the new venture.
