India Begins Work To Curb Greenhouse Emissions

India has taken up projects under the "Activities Implemented Jointly" scheme, under which it will seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in co-operation with industrialised countries.
The scheme is similar to that of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol which is yet to become operational. However, unlike the CDM, no credit for reduction in greenhouse gas emission will be passed on to the funding country to achieve its carbon reduction target under the protocol.
An `Activities Implemented Jointly' project is being implemented by Decentralised Energy Systems Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of the New Delhi based non-government organisation Development Alternatives. The project will receive funding from the government of Netherlands, officials in the ministry of non-conventional energy sources said. Netherlands will provide assistance worth $6,70,000 to set up power plants based on biomass gasification.

Earlier, the Dutch minister for development co-operation and the ministry had entered into an accord to take up such projects under the umbrella of `Establishment of Independent Rural Power Plants and Micro Enterprises for Sustainable Development'.
This is part of the global endeavour to stabilise greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere so that they do not cause climate change and the global warming.
