Learn From China, Says Intel Corp Ceo Barrett

The newly-appointed president and chief operating officer of Intel Corporation, Craig R Barrett, yesterday urged India to catch up with China in the use of computers in business and social sectors, and said the key to its economic progress lay in promoting information technology.
Computer industry in India is small but growing. With your tradition of high quality education, there is enormous scope to develop this industry here, Barrett said after a presentation on Visual computing in health-care here.
Pointing out that China ranked third in the world in the use of computers, Barrett said India was far behind and it should learn from the Chinese example.

Computers are vital for economic development. Its true for any country, and its true for India too, he remarked.
Barrett wanted every home in the country to have a personal computer, so that the benefits of education, health-care and employment could be easily accessed by them.
He said Intel was bullish on the prospects of the Indian information technology sector and was planning to enhance its presence here, through collaborations with software and hardware providers.
As for manufacturing from India, he said the company preferred to keep its options open.
Earlier, in his presentation, Barrett called for increased investment in Indias health-care industry for telecommunication and computers and said Intel would play a positive role in catalysing this development.
He said computers could play a useful role in health-care, by helping create enterprise-wide networks for better patient care, connecting doctors, clinics and medical facilities in a city for exchanging vital information and also accessing international expertise for treating patients.
