BSCAL

The Steel Authority of India's Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) has closed the first six months of the current financial year with a saleable steel production of 6.11 lakh tonne, recording a growth of 8.7 per cent over the corresponding period last year.

According to a company release, production in the first half is the best-ever recorded since inception.

The plant has been setting new output records in all major areas of operation in its post-modernisation years, the company release pointed out

Hot metal production too increased by 7.6 per cent to 7.87 lakh tonne as against 7.32 lakh tonne in the corresponding period last year.

Crude steel output during the first-half stood at 6.71 lakh tonne, recording a growth of 3.3 per cent over last year's production of 6.50 lakh tonne.

The basic oxygen furnace (BOF) shop and the continuous casting plant recorded growth rates of 16.2 per cent and 5.8 per cent respectively, indicating the positive effects of the modernisation process, the release said.

Positive growth rates were also recorded in sinter production and oven pushing.

DSP, which has embarked on a major cost control drive, plans to save over Rs 240 crore this year. According to the release, the plant has the lowest operating cost amongst all the integrated SAIL plants.

Besides production and cost control, DSP has been taking adequate measures in the area of environment control. The installation of pollution control equipment at the plant has resulted in improved quality of effluent discharge and air.

The quality of effluents to the Damodar river are being kept within the norms and the concentration of grease and oil in outfall is being maintained within the norm of 10mg per litre as against the previous level of 170mg per litre.
