Scrips Fall In Listless Trades

Pivotals moved in a narrow range and closed with modest losses on bouts of selling pressure on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday. The NSE-50 index resumed weak at 997.10 and closed at 993.65, showing a fall of 3.90 over the last close of 997.55.
The dollar NSE-50 (Defty) index also opened weak at 888.30 and dropped further to end at 884.25, revealing a fall of 4.60 over the previous close of 888.85. The Midcap index, after a better start at 1,106.40, closed at 1,106, disclosing a small fall of 0.15 from the last close of 1,106.15.

Marketmen said that trading sentiment was generally listless as operators were cutting positions in view of the fluid situation in the Gulf. The total turnover yesterday was Rs 973.50 crore from 391.43 lakh shares in 1,25,412 trades. Debentures turnover was Rs 88.87 lakh. The top traded securities on the NSE were ITC with a volume of Rs 279.31 crore, Tata Tea with Rs 108.03 crore and Hind Lever with Rs 89.38 crore. Fifty-three securities had hit their price bands yesterday, an NSE release said.
The other active securities were Reliance (Rs 73.96 cr), Castrol (Rs 64.37 cr), SBI-N (Rs 48.44 cr), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (Rs 42.11 cr), Telco (Rs 35.54 cr), LML (Rs 30.99 cr), Bajaj Auto (Rs 25.90 cr), ACC (Rs 21.21 cr), Larsen & Toubro (Rs 13.08 cr), Tisco (Rs 10.17 cr), Nestle (Rs 7.16 cr), Ponds (Rs 7.08 cr), BHEL (Rs 5.84 cr), Pentsfware (Rs 5.53 cr), Ranbaxy (Rs 5.47 cr), Orchidchem (Rs 5.41 cr), Corpbank (Rs 5.18 cr), HPCL (Rs 5.18 cr), BSES (Rs 4.03 cr), Glaxo (Rs 3.50 cr), Colgate (Rs 3.48 cr) and P&G (Rs 3.29 cr).
Todays top five Nifty gainers were BPCL Rs 363.10 (Rs 351.95), EIH Rs 322.60 (Rs 316.70), MTNL Rs 240.35 (Rs 236.30), Bajaj Auto Rs 540.50 (Rs 535.90) and Tata Power Rs 105.80 (Rs 104.95).
The major losers were Indo Gulf Rs 31.70 (Rs 32.55), Telco Rs 232.10 (Rs 237.60), BHEL Rs 287.55 (Rs 293.75), HPCL Rs 412.85 (Rs 421.25) and Reliance Rs 150.35 (Rs 152.80).
The Indo Rama Synthetics scrip continued to witnessed huge volumes with a little over 12 lakh shares changing hands. Marketmen attributed this to warehousing by operators.
