Tension Mounts At Paradip Phosphates Premises

BSCAL

According to PPL sources, the suspension of 65 workers out of a total of 854 engaged in the bagging plant was a sequel to the go-slow tactics resorted to by the workers in the past three weeks.

The suspended workers had been charged with instigating other workers to resort to a go-slow. Adequate police forces, including a magistrate, were posted at the site to tackle any untoward situation.Sources said the contract workers owing allegiance to the Intuc-led Paradip Phosphates Mazdoor Union had submitted a 29-point charter of demands which included regularisation of their services, 20 per cent bonus, facilities at par with regular employees of PPL, provision of residential accommodation of subsidised canteen facility.

As a result of the go-slow movement in the bagging plant, silos (storage godown) of PPL had almost been filled up. Despatch of fertiliser was also seriously affected.
