Tisco Switches On Desulphurising Compound Plant

BSCAL

Tata Steel, in collaboration with its partners SKW of Germany and TAI Industries, Calcutta, has commissioned a 15,000 tonne per annum desulphurising compounds manufacturing plant at Jamshedpur last week.

The Rs 20-crore plant has been set up by Jamshedpur Injection Power Ltd (Jamipol), a joint venture company promoted by the Tisco group.

The joint venture has a foreign equity participation of 50 per cent from SKW of Germany and a significant holding by Calcutta-based TAI Industries.

According to a press release, the major portion of the production from the 15,000 tonne plant will be used for the captive use of Tata Steel.

The plant may also cater to the Steel Authority of India Ltds Rourkela plant which has the necessary desulphurising facilities.

Inaugurating the plant, Jamshed J Irani, managing director of Tata Steel said, This is a plant with the prime objective of encouraging and enhancing industrial progress in Bihar.

The company is confident of finding a market for the plant as it is only a matter of time before other steel plants also put up similar facilities, the press release added.

The technology for the production of the desulphurising compound and for its subsequent application has been supplied by SKW, which is the global leader in this area and caters to more than 50 per cent of the European markets.

The plant will manufacture carbide and magnesium-based compounds.

A unique aspect of the technology used in this plant is that it has the means to tailor-make the desulphurising compound to meet specific hot metal desulphurisation requirements of different steel plants. The plant has been engineered by Dasturco, consultants to the project.

S M Mehra, managing director of Jamipol, observed that though the plant is small compared to large industrial units it has the intricacies of a big project and, therefore, the completion of the plant in 14 months is significant. The chief executive of SKW was also present during the inauguration.

The major raw material to be used by the plant is carbide and will be provided by Bhutan Carbide, a group company of TAI Industries.
