Webel Nicco Bags Grundig Contract

Webel Nicco Electronics, the joint venture between the West Bengal Government and the Calcutta-based Nicco group, has recently bagged manufacturing contracts from two television firms ---Onida and Grundig.
According to Webel Nicco's newly appointed managing director, P K Gupta, the company has already commenced production of black and white and colour television sets designed by the respective companies.
Gupta said trial manufacturing for the two companies is over, and orders have already started coming in. However, the orders are not for fixed quantities.

"The orders we get are according to the demands of the respective companies," Gupta said.
He further added that the orders also vary according to the market demands.
"During the Puja season and Diwali, the demand is relatively high, and after that there is a lull. However, with the World Cup '98 coming up, we expect the demand to soar again," said Gupta.
The company also has a similar manufacturing arrangement with Philips. Webel Nicco, along with its ancilliaries, has been providing an average of 6,500 sets per month to Philips.
Currently, the company has six ancilliaries under it out of which two manufacture sets for Philips and the remaining four make Webel Nicco sets.
Now, the manufacturing arrangements, by Gupta's own admission, have to be adjusted to accomodate the two new clients.
For long, Webel Nicco was the only company that manufactured colour television sets for Philips.
