Film piracy has become a global concern with the growing number of free movie downloads from the Internet.

To keep a check on this, Hawaii-based EggUp.com, a technology company, was launched in India last month. The company aims to control piracy by selling content on a secured online distribution platform.

EggUp, developed by US-based Key Asylum Inc, is a do-it-yourself video monetisation and distribution platform for filmmakers to upload their content and generate revenue.

The content, player and server all are encrypted with the platform, which allows for a transparent and secure data. Its ‘Egg’ application is a digitally encrypted container that consists of the trailer, movie, cast and crew, advertisements and up to 100 megabyte of promotional that can be viewed on iPhone and iPad, through secure download and instant streaming, said Anand Kannan, senior vice-president (international business), Key Asylum Inc.

It adopts a pay-per-view revenue model. Roughly, if a movie gets 3,000 hits per month, then it earns $15,000 per month, he said.

The company started its operations in Karnataka last month in partnership with the Karnataka film industry. “We are also in talks with Andhra Pradesh and Tamil film industry for the service,” said Nagender Polamraju, chief executive of Infosol, the domestic representative of EggUp. It is targeting distributors, film makers, satellite channels and consumers.
