Last week, Congress strategist Prashant Kishor held a meeting of young party members belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Uttar Pradesh. The meeting lasted more than five hours. Kishor asked those hoping to get tickets in the state's Assembly elections in 2017 to form teams of 250 young people. He told them he was only a strategist; the actual work had to be done by volunteers. His message: don't fight with each other, don't pay attention to rumours and gossip, just do your work. When young leaders said they wanted more tickets and representation, Kishor told them that in Punjab too, 40 per cent of those getting tickets were young people. The same pattern would be followed in UP, he said. Kishor will be camping in the state for the next 10 months.

Just like Prashant Kishor, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah is likely to shift to Uttar Pradesh by the end of May and spend as much time as possible in the state. That's what he has told party colleagues. This is hardly music to the ears of Shah's other party colleagues, including those in UP. Keshav Maurya has just been chosen to head the state unit of the BJP by Shah, causing a lot of heartburn to other hopefuls. All of them had been assured by Shah that they would get respect and due consideration. Maurya's appointment surprised even top BJP leaders. The upside is the attack on Maurya by Bahujan Samaj Party head Mayawati; it suggests the party is a bit rattled by the appointment.

Not surprisingly, he was trolled and served a geography lesson on Twitter, followed by advice from Congress member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor to do his homework. Only time will tell if it leads to potential voters "swinging" away from him.

'Hit wicket' on Twitter

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government merged the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan, launched by the United Progressive Alliance government, with the Khelo India programme for the development of sports, on Wednesday. In the process, the present government dropped the name of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi from the programme. Not that this was the first instance of the NDA government renaming a programme that was originally named after Gandhi. The Rajiv Rinn Yojana was subsumed in another scheme - the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The move to drop Gandhi's name from the sports programme has left the Congress fuming. Party leader Tom Vadakkan warned the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA government that "its clock is ticking".
