BJP sure of repeat show in Kutch as Congress slugs it out, AAP splits votes

The BJP is confident of maintaining its winning streak in Kutch district in Gujarat Assembly polls even as the Congress is carrying out a silent campaign in rural areas and the Aam Aadmi Party is setting the stage for a three-cornered fight by throwing its hat in the ring. The All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is contesting in two minority-dominated seats. Kutch, which goes to polls in the first phase on December 1, has six Assembly constituencies - Abdasa, Bhuj, Rapar- all bordering Pakistan, and Mandvi, Anjar and Gandhidham. The district has around 16 lakh voters spread across the six constituencies, out of which male and female voters are equally proportionate. Muslims comprise around 19 per cent of the total electorate, whereas the Dalits comprise around 12 per cent, and the Patels, including the Leuvas and Kadvas, constitute about 10.5 per cent. The Kshatriya and the Koli communities comprise around 6.5 per cent and 5.2 per cent of the electorate, ...

2020 Delhi riots: Court rejects bail plea of AAP leader Tahir Hussain

A court here has rejected the bail plea of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Tahir Hussain in a 2020 northeast Delhi riots case registered against him. The court observed that witnesses who had deposed regarding Hussain's role in the case would be "under tremendous pressure and threat" if he was granted bail. Hussain had applied for bail in the case which was registered on a statement by complainant Ajay Goswami who had suffered a bullet injury during an incident of rioting on the Main Karawal Nagar Road on February 25, 2020. The court had framed charges against Hussain and seven others in the case for offences, including attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy, on November 5. "Therefore, not only is there a case with serious allegations against the applicant, but there are also serious apprehensions of influence and threat to the witnesses," Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala said in an order passed on Wednesday. Satyendar Jain moves court, seeks contempt proceedings against ED

Jailed AAP minister Satyendar Jain on Saturday moved a court here seeking contempt proceedings against the Enforcement Directorate for allegedly leaking a CCTV footage to the media in which he is seen receiving massage inside Tihar Jail. Special Judge Vikas Dhull issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate on Jain's plea, asking the agency to file its response by Monday. In his plea, the Aam Aadmi Party leader has accused the ED of leaking the CCTV footage "despite an undertaking given in the court" that no material related to the case will be divulged to the media. A CCTV footage of Jain getting massage inside Thar Jail emerged in the mainstream as well as social media on Saturday morning. Earlier during a bail hearing, the ED had accused Jain of getting special treatment inside the jail. The court had earlier ordered the ED as well as Jain's legal team to not leak any content of affidavits or video related to the case to the media, and had taken their undertakings in that ...

Delhi court denies bail to Satyendar Jain in money laundering case

A Delhi court on Thursday denied bail to AAP leader Satyendar Jain and two others in a money laundering case. All three (bail) applications dismissed, Special Judge Vikas Dhull said. The judge had reserved the order after hearing arguments of the accused persons, including Vaibhav Jain and Ankush Jain, as well as the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The federal agency had arrested the accused in the money laundering case based on a CBI FIR lodged against Jain in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Jain is accused of having laundered money through four companies allegedly linked to him. Recently, the court also took cognisance of the prosecution complaint (charge sheet) filed by the ED against Jain, his wife and eight others, including four firms, in connection with the money laundering case.

Gujarat assembly polls: AAP's Surat East candidate withdraws nomination

The Aam Aadmi Party's Surat East Assembly seat candidate in Gujarat withdrew his nomination on Wednesday, with the AAP alleging that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party pressured him to do so. The BJP, however, denied the charge and asked the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP to "take care of its own house". Elections for the 182-member Gujarat Assembly will be held in two phases on December 1 and 5 and the counting of votes will be taken up on December 8. State AAP president Gopal Italia claimed their Surat East candidate Kanchan Jariwala appeared before the office of the Returning Officer on Wednesday under heavy police protection and surrounded by "BJP goons" to withdraw his candidature under the pressure of the ruling party. When mediapersons questioned Jariwala, he was hurriedly whisked away by the persons surrounding him. Italia alleged that Jariwala had gone missing and was allegedly taken to an undisclosed location by the BJP goons who put pressure on him to stay away from the ...

Northeast Delhi riots: SC refuses to stay proceedings against Tahir Hussain

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay proceedings against former Aam Aadmi Party councillor Tahir Hussain in FIRs registered against him in connection with the 2020 northeast Delhi riots. A bench of justices Ajay Rastogi and CT Ravi Kumar said it is not inclined to interfere with the September 16 order of the Delhi High Court as it is an interim order. Senior advocate Maneka Guruswamy, appearing for Hussain, said it is a settled law that there cannot be two FIRs for the same incident. She said it has put Hussain in a peculiar situation that charges are framed against him for identical offences arising out of the same incident, and the same prosecution witnesses are relied upon by the investigating agency. Hussain has moved the top court challenging the Delhi High Court's September 16 order. The bench said it is not inclined to interfere with the high court order and all remedies are open to the petitioner. It noted that the high court had issued notices on the applications

BJP govt delaying assembly polls in J&K to continue its proxy rule: AAP

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday alleged the BJP government was delaying the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir on one pretext or another to deny people their democratic rights. AAP leader Harsh Dev Singh said that while no initiative has been taken to install a popular government in Jammu and Kashmir, the administration seem to have been outsourced to bureaucrats, mostly from outside the Union Territory and having hardly any connect with the masses who are deprived of even basic amenities. "The BJP-led government was inventing one excuse after another to deny people their democratic rights and to continue its proxy rule," he told reporters in the Chenani area. Singh said the silence of the Centre and the Election Commission on Jammu and Kashmir while announcing the elections for Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat amply revealed the government's intention. Democracy has been reduced to a farce in Jammu and Kashmir with the political process having been rendered defunct and ...
