US authorities have begun interviewing personnel, including Indian crew members, onboard the crippled container ship 'Dali' that collided against a key bridge in Baltimore this week. Shipping company Synergy Group, which manages the Singapore-flagged 'DALI', said in a statement on Thursday that the US agency National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) boarded the vessel on Wednesday and collected documents, voyage data recorder extracts, and other evidence as part of their investigation. One of the 22 Indian crew manning a cargo ship, Dali, which collided against a bridge in Baltimore has suffered a "minor injury" while the rest are all safe aboard the vessel, owners of the Singapore-flagged ship said on Wednesday. Several persons were injured in an accident at Varkala beach here on Saturday when a huge wave hit a floating bridge that people were standing on, toppling many of them into the water, police said. An officer of the Varkala police station said 11 persons, including two children, were injured in the accident in which a handrail of the floating bridge was also broken due to the impact of the waves. Two of the injured persons were referred to the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College as their injuries were serious, police said. As the people standing on the floating bridge were wearing life jackets, they could be brought back to shore quickly and safely without any loss of life, it said. The incident occurred around 5 pm, police said.
At least two persons were run over and killed by a train in Jharkhand's Jamtara district on Wednesday evening, police said. Jamtara sub-division police officer (SDPO) M Rahman told PTI that the accident took place near Kaljharia area in Jamtara district when some passengers got down from the train from the wrong side. "A local train coming on another line hit them," he said. "Bodies of two persons have been recovered so far. Search operation is on and the toll might increase," he said.
There was one accident for every 1.26 million flights operated globally in 2023 and it was the lowest rate in more than a decade, according to airlines' grouping IATA. Releasing the data, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) on Wednesday said there were no hull losses or fatal accidents involving passenger jet aircraft in 2023. "However, there was a single fatal accident involving a turboprop aircraft, resulting in 72 fatalities. There were 37 million aircraft movements in 2023 (jet and turboprop), an increase of 17 per cent on the previous year," it said in a release. IATA represents around 320 airlines comprising 83 per cent of global air traffic. "The all accident rate was 0.80 per million sectors in 2023 (one accident for every 1.26 million flights), an improvement from 1.30 in 2022 and the lowest rate in over a decade. This rate outperformed the five-year (2019-2023) rolling average of 1.19 (an average one accident for every 8,80,293 flights)," the release said.
At least 13 people including police personnel were injured when a police jeep met with an accident here Saturday evening while securing the route for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's cavalcade, officials said. It was not immediately clear whether the chief minister was in the convoy which met with the accident in Arjunganj while returning from the airport here. According to police sources, the accident occurred when the speeding jeep hit a vehicle parked on the roadside while trying to avoid an animal that suddenly came before it. They said the local police' jeep was at least a kilometre ahead of the cavalcade. Twenty-four people, including eight children, died when their tractor-trolley overturned and fell into a pond in Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj district on Saturday morning, police said. They said 15 to 20 people were injured in the accident that occurred on the Patiyali-Dariyavganj road under the Patiyali police station area when the occupants of the tractor-trolley were going to take a bath in the Ganga river. Inspector General of Aligarh Range Shalabh Mathur said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has condoled the loss of lives in the accident and announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of each of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. Fatal accidents in the national capital were reduced by 15 per cent in January this year compared to the same month in 2023, officials said on Saturday. Measures to check the accidents, including spatial analysis of accident spots, has resulted in a reduction in both daytime and night-time crashes, an official statement released by Delhi Traffic Police stated. According to the official data, a total of 97 fatal accidents were reported this January, while the number was 114 last January. The city reported 322 "simple accidents" in January this year and 313 in the same month last year. In 2024, a total of 99 people died in the accidents and 394 got injured this year. The number of persons who lost their lives and got injured were 116 and 423 respectively in January 2023, the data showed. Data from January 2024 compared to the same month in the previous year also showed a decrease in non-injury and "simple crashes" by 36.4 per cent and 2.9 per cent respectively. Road traffic injurie
Alaska Airlines has begun flying Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliners again for the first time since they were grounded after a panel blew out of the side of one of the airline's planes. The airline said in a statement that it has completed its final inspection of their group of the aircraft. They said they resumed flying the Max 9 with a flight from Seattle to San Diego on Friday afternoon. On Wednesday, the Federal Aviation Administration approved the inspection and maintenance process to return the planes to flying. Technicians at Alaska began inspections that night, the airline said. The airline said they expect inspections to be completed by the end of next week, allowing the airline to operate a full flight schedule. Inspections are expected to take up to 12 hours per aircraft. At least four people were charred to death when a fire broke out in a house in northwest Delhi's Pitampura area on Thursday evening, fire officials said. One person is missing, they said. A call was received at 8 pm from ZP block, Pitampura about the blaze and eight fire tenders were pressed into service, the fire officials said. A Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officer said four people died in the fire and one person is missing. The fire has been doused and the cooling operation is underway, the officer said. Police personnel and rescue teams were also present at the spot.
Two women were killed and 55 others injured when a private bus carrying employees of a Pune-based firm overturned in a ghat in Maharashtra's Raigad district on Saturday, police said. The accident occurred at Tahmani Ghat at Mangaon around 7.30 am, an official said. The bus was carrying employees of a private firm who were heading to Harihareshwar, about 170 km from Pune, for New Year's Eve celebrations, he said. The bus was coming down from the ghat section when it overturned, killing two women passengers on the spot, the official said. Locals gathered at the scene and informed the police. The injured were initially rushed to the district hospital in Mangaon, he said. Himachal Pradesh saw a 13 per cent drop in the number of road accidents reported in the state this year, police officials said on Friday. There has been a 13 per cent reduction in road traffic accidents, 19 per cent dip in deaths due to them and 15 per cent drop in injuries between January 1 and December 1 as compared to the same period in 2022, a statement issued here by the police headquarters said. The reduction in the number of road accidents reflects the greater awareness among drivers in Himachal Pradesh and the improvement in identifying black spots on national highways and district roads, Director General Police (DGP) Sanjay Kundu said. The number of accidents has come down despite a 10 per cent growth in road lengths and a nine per cent growth of vehicle registration, he said. A passenger bus lost control while negotiating a downhill curve in a central Philippine mountain village and plunged into a deep ravine, killing at least 16 people and injuring 12 others, officials said Wednesday. Eight of the wounded in the accident, which happened Tuesday afternoon in Hamtic town in the province of Antique, were in critical condition at a local hospital, officials said. The air-conditioned bus, which came from the nearby Iloilo province, was maneuvering through the accident-prone mountain road when the driver, who was among those killed, lost control. Vertical drilling from above the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel has been done up to 31 metres, former DG of Border Roads Organisation Harpal Singh said on Monday at the site of the rescue operation. A total of 86 metres have to be drilled vertically to prepare an escape passage for the 41 workers trapped for the last 15 days. Pipes of 1.2 metres in diameter have to be laid vertically through the top of the tunnel by this method adopted as a second option. Preparations are also underway to start horizontal drilling inside the main tunnel manually, he said. Rescuers need to manually dig 10 to 12 metres through the rubble after the auger machine broke down. "Frames of 800 mm diameter pipes have been prepared.
