Proposed criminal laws seek to provide justice rather than punishment: Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said the three proposed criminal laws are people-centric, have the flavour of Indian soil and their main purpose is to protect the constitutional, human and personal rights of citizens. Addressing the International Lawyers' Conference organised by the Bar Council of India here, Shah also said the approach of the three bills is also to provide justice rather than mete out punishment. He appealed to all lawyers in the country to provide their suggestions to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS-2023), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS-2023) and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA-2023) so that the country can have the best laws that benefit all. The three bills, which were introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 11, will replace the Indian Penal Code, 1860, Criminal Procedure Act, 1898, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 respectively. "India's criminal justice system was imprinted with colonial law. All three new bills do not have colonial impr

Cooperative sector hurt by political interference in the past: Amit Shah

Union minister Amit Shah on Saturday said the co-operative sector was "not irrelevant", but it was hurt by political interference in the past. The Narendra Modi government's decision to de-link it from the agriculture ministry gave the sector a tremendous boost, he said. Shah, who also handles the co-operation portfolio alongside the home ministry, was delivering the Laxmanrao Inamdar Memorial Lecture at Mumbai University. Co-operation is a human-centric model where people with minimum capital can contribute to the economy by coming together and compete with those who have access to more funds, he said. He also said that the Modi government brought into mainstream some 60 crore people who did not have bank accounts and were part of the informal economy. The cooperative movement must absorb modern technologies, he said, adding that "mass production and production by masses" is required.

HD Kumaraswamy meets Shah, Nadda as Janta Dal(S) joins hands with BJP

In a boost to the BJP in Karnataka ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Janada Dal (Secular) has decided to ally with the party following a meeting of its leader H D Kumaraswamy with Home Minister Amit Shah and party president J P Nadda. After the meeting, Nadda said on X, "I am happy that JD(S) has decided to be the part of National Democratic Alliance. We wholeheartedly welcome them in the NDA. This will further strengthen NDA and vision of Hon PM Narendra Modi Ji for 'New India, Strong India'." Shah was present in the meeting. Headed by former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, the JD(S) has long been a strong third player in the southern state where the Congress and the BJP have been the two main parties. Women's Reservation Bill incomplete without OBC quota, caste census: Gehlot

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday said the women's reservation bill has been welcomed by everyone but is incomplete without OBC reservation and the caste census. Speaking to reporters after a programme here, Gehlot said the bill has been brought for political gain with an eye on upcoming elections under the pressure of the opposition. "If they (Centre) wanted, they could have done it nine years ago because they had full majority. If you have majority then the work becomes easy. Even then they did not do it. Now elections are also coming. It is understood that if the opposition (India alliance) is raising the issue of caste census, then caste census is also important," Gehlot said. The Government of India itself should come forward and do what Sonia Gandhi and many opposition parties felt that you should give reservation to SC/ST/OBC. Make reservation for them also in the 33 percent reservation for women. Then only, all castes, all classes will get a chance to come .

Pass women's reservation Bill, shortcomings can be rectified: Amit Shah

Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday appealed to the opposition for the unanimous passage of the women's reservation bill and said shortcomings, if any, can be rectified at a later date. Brushing aside apprehensions of a delay in the bill's implementation, Shah said the next government will conduct the census and the delimitation exercise immediately after the elections and set in motion the process to make reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state Assemblies a reality. Intervening in the debate on the Constitution (128th Amendment) Bill, Shah indicated that women's reservation will become a reality after 2029. He said the passage of the women's reservation bill will mark the start of a new era, and recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had presented the vision of women-led development at the recent G20 Summit. The Modi government has been pushing for empowerment of women since the day it assumed office, he said. Women's security, respect and equal participation have been

Why object to Nishikant as first BJP speaker on women's quota bill: Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday wondered whether Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was "jealous" of Nishikant Dubey, who was the first speaker from the BJP ranks on the women's reservation bill in the Lok Sabha. Shah's remarks came after Chowdhury and other opposition leaders pointed out that the BJP was fielding a male member to speak on the debate on the bill. Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi was the first speaker on the bill from the opposition ranks. "I wish to ask Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury whether only women should speak on these issues. Can't men speak on women's issues," Shah asked. He also wondered why there should be any objection to Dubey being the first to speak on the bill. "Perhaps he (Chowdhury) is jealous because he did not get to be the first speaker," Shah said. The home minister further said it has been the tradition of this country for brothers to think about and speak on women's welfare. The Lok Sabha on Wednesday took up the Constitution (
