Business leader Nadir Godrej on Sunday said manufacturing, healthcare and other sectors in India can scale newer heights with the right use of artificial intelligence. Here to attend the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, Godrej also said India can achieve its net-zero goals ahead of the deadline as the country is moving in the right direction on climate related matters. Speaking to PTI, he said AI has great potential to help various sectors by optimising processes and it should be seen as a facilitator rather than a disruptor. Godrej is chairman and managing director of business conglomerate Godrej Industries. IMD to use AI to better forecasts, admits predicting weather challenging

As it celebrates 150th year of its establishment, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now set its eyes on fine-tuning its weather forecast models using artificial intelligence and faster supercomputers even though it struggles to predict small-level severe weather events. In an interview with PTI, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the weather office was setting up test beds in Odisha and Madhya Pradesh to better understand the physical processes leading to the formation of thunderstorms and heavy monsoon rains which could eventually help improve forecasts. The IMD will kick start its 150th-anniversary celebrations on Monday with the launch of Panchayat Mausam Seva' that aims to take weather forecasts to every farmer in every village and the National Framework for Climate Services to mainstream climate information in every sector and activity. Mohapatra said from issuing cyclone warnings at the Kolkata port in the late 19th century to issuing nowcasts that reac

AI-powered misinformation is biggest short-term threat: Davos report

False and misleading information supercharged with cutting-edge artificial intelligence that threatens to erode democracy and polarize society is the top immediate risk to the global economy, the World Economic Forum said in a report on Wednesday. In its latest Global Risks Report, the organisation also said an array of environmental risks pose the biggest threats in the longer term. The report was released ahead of the annual elite gathering of CEOs and world leaders in the Swiss ski resort town of Davos and is based on a survey of nearly 1,500 experts, industry leaders and policymakers. The report listed misinformation and disinformation as the most severe risk over the next two years, highlighting how rapid advances in technology also are creating new problems or making existing ones worse. The authors worry that the boom in generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT means that creating sophisticated synthetic content that can be used to manipulate groups of people won't be limited any

Walmart experiments with AI to enhance customers' shopping experiences

Walmart has unveiled plans to dive further into the world of artificial intelligence -- and drones -- to improve its customers' shopping experiences. In a Tuesday keynote at trade show CES in Las Vegas, the nation's largest retailer announced that it would be expanding its drone delivery to 1.8 million additional households in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area later this year. Drones aren't new to Walmart -- which has already completed 20,000 drone deliveries across seven states to date -- but company leaders say that this expansion displays growing demand and efficiency. Walmart executives said no other rival has gotten this close to this type of drone concentration of households in a big metro market. Among AI advances, Walmart announced a generative AI-powered search experience for iOS customers, which suggests relevant products for consumer queries ranging from football watch parties to bridal showers. The company also provided a glimpse into InHome Replenishment, which ...
