EV solutions startup Urja Mobility on Monday announced the launch of its B2C battery leasing program, targeting e-rickshaw drivers in 10 cities of the country. The initiative "Smart Opex Model" provides drivers access to Lithium-Ion batteries, which offer longer life cycles, minimal maintenance, and enhanced thermal performance compared to traditional Lead Acid options, the company said. The cities included in the initial phase are Agra, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Siliguri, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, and Puri. Urja Mobility said these strategic locations have a high EV adoption pace and significant tourist traffic, enabling drivers to maximize asset utilisation. "This initiative represents a significant step forward in making electric mobility accessible and affordable for e-rickshaw drivers. By providing a cost-effective, reliable, and sustainable battery solution, we aim to empower drivers and contribute to India's vision for a greener future," said Commenting on
Financial penalties for failing to meet extended producers' responsibility obligations encourage battery recyclers and increase their profitability, said an official on Saturday. Addressing India Battery Recycling and Reuse Summit 2025, in the run-up to Bharat Battery Show, Central Pollution Control Board Director V P Yadav said,"Considering all the challenges faced by recyclers, we have designed a system in which producers who fail to meet their obligations will face financial penalties." These penalties will ultimately benefit the recyclers, as they generate credits that are then transferred to producers in exchange for compensation, he explained. "We are also encouraging recyclers because we understand that without profitability, the recycling business will not thrive. Therefore, our efforts are driven by economic factors", Yadav said at the summit organised by industry body India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA). Bharat Battery Show is a part of Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 .
A major fire burning Friday at one of the world's largest battery storage plants in Northern California is sending up flames of toxic smoke, leading to the evacuation of 1,700 people and the closure of a major highway. The blaze in Moss Landing started Thursday. Fire crews were not engaging with the fire but were waiting for it to burn out on its own, The Mercury News reported. The blaze was still burning early Friday and it had not gone beyond the facility, according to Monterey County spokesperson Nicholas Pasculli. As of late Thursday, a few dozen people were at a temporary evacuation centre and the rest had gone to friends or family or made other arrangements, Pasculli said. The Moss Landing Power Plant, located about 77 miles (125 kilometres) south of San Francisco, is owned by Texas-based company Vistra Energy and contains tens of thousands of lithium batteries. The batteries are important for storing electricity from such renewable energy sources as solar energy, but if the

Reliance Power on Monday announced that it has secured a battery storage contract of 500 MW through the e-reverse auction (eRA) conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The auction, held on September 11, 2024, is part of SECI's initiative to enhance energy storage capabilities across the country. The contract involves the installation of a total of 1,000 MW of standalone BESS units, awarded on a build-own-operate (BOO) model for "On Demand" usage under a tariff-based competitive bidding process. Reliance Power has secured 500 MW MWh of this capacity, marking a significant entry into the renewable energy and storage sector, a company spokesperson said. The competitive bidding saw Reliance Power submitting a tariff bid of Rs 3.81999 lakh/MW/month. This new tariff benchmark represents one of the lowest rates for BESS tenders at the 400 KV level in India to date. The delivery point for the project shall be 400 kV Fatehgarh(ATL) PS, Rajasthan.
