BJP candidate and former MLA Kedar Prasad Gupta on Tuesday filed his nomination papers for the December 5 by-poll to Kurhani assembly constituency in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district. Gupta will taking on JD(U) nominee Manoj Singh Kushwaha, a two-time MLA from the constituency. Kushwaha has the support of the seven-party Grand Alliance. Sources in the BJP said Gupta, too, enjoys the support of two factions of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) one led by Union minister Pashupati Kumar Paras and the other by his nephew Chirag Paswan. IPFT MLA Mevar Kumar Jamatia on Tuesday said he has resigned as a member of the Tripura assembly. Jamatia is the third MLA of the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of the BJP, to resign ahead of next year's assembly elections in the Northeastern state. In June last year, Brishaketu Debbarma had submitted his resignation as the MLA of Simna constituency, while Raima Valley MLA Dhananjoy Tripura quit last month. Union Minister Raosaheb Danve on Thursday brushed aside speculation that some legislators belonging to the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde may form a group with the intention of merging with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The senior BJP leader said there was no need for such a move as the Shinde group and his party were in alliance and were running the state government smoothly and efficiently. The BJP on Wednesday released its first list of 62 candidates for the polls to the 68-member Himachal Pradesh assembly, fielding Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur from his current constituency Seraj. The party dropped 11 sitting MLAs, including a cabinet minister, and changed the seats of two ministers -- Suresh Bharadwaj and Rakesh Pathania. BJP MLA Niladri Sekhar Dana appeared before the West Bengal CID on Tuesday morning for questioning in the alleged recruitment irregularities at AIIMS-Kalyani, a senior officer said. Dana, the MLA of Bankura, reached the CID office in Bhabani Bhaban in south Kolkata around 11 am, he said. The CID earlier questioned the BJP leader's daughter Maitri Dana, who was recruited at AIIMS-Kalyani. It is alleged that he used his influence for his daughter's recruitment at the hospital in Nadia district. The CID started the investigation after a complaint was filed by a job aspirant at the Kalyani police station. The CBI has taken over the probe into the mysterious death of Haryana BJP leader Sonali Phogat in Goa last month, officials said Thursday. The central probe agency re-registered the FIR of Goa Police on a reference from the Ministry of Home Affairs which was routed to it through the Department of Personnel and Training, they said. Teams of the CBI along with CFSL experts will reach Goa to collect documents and interact with the local police officials and doctors who had examined the former TV anchor after she was brought to the hospital. The sources said viscera samples will give a definitive clue about the causes of Phogat's death. BJP MLA from Gola Gokarnnath constituency Arvind Giri died due to cardiac arrest on Tuesday, a party leader said. Giri (65), a resident of Tirath locality here is survived by his wife Sudha Giri, two sons and as many daughters, family sources said. According to party leaders, Giri was travelling to Lucknow in his car when he felt uneasy and was taken to a hospital in Sidhauli where he died.
