PM Modi's 'communal civil code' remarks insult to Ambedkar: Congress

The opposition on Thursday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of peddling a "divisive agenda", with the Congress slamming his "communal civil code" remarks during his Independence Day speech as a "gross insult" to B R Ambedkar. The Congress also alleged that Modi's capacity for "malice, mischief, and maligning" history was on full display at the Red Fort. The Congress's denunciation came in the wake of Modi saying a "secular civil code" is the need of the hour as the existing set of laws is a "communal civil code" and discriminatory. In his Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, the prime minister said, "A large section of the country believes, which is true also, that the civil code is actually, in a way, a communal civil code. It discriminates (among people)." Slamming Modi, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, "The non-biological PM's capacity for malice, mischief, and maligning of history knows no bounds. It was on full display today from the Re

BJP's Partition Day an attempt to spread hatred, divisive thinking: Kharge

Launching a scathing attack on the BJP-led government, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge Thursday said the rulers of today are encouraging divisive thinking and marking the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day with the intention of spreading hatred. In his address at the AICC headquarters here on the occasion of the 78th Independence Day, Kharge slammed the RSS, saying that the Sangh Parivar promoted Britishers' divide-and-rule policy for their own benefit. "Unity in diversity is our strength and not a weakness. Some people propagate that we got independence easily but the truth is that lakhs of people made sacrifices, left their homes and even people from well-to-do families spent time in jails," he said. Instead of walking the path shown by them, the rulers of today are giving encouragement to divisive thinking, he said. "They mark Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas with the intention of spreading hatred. Those who did not participate in the Independence movement give advice to th

Nehru not named in Prez address, attempt to erase history, says Congress

The Congress Thursday took a strong objection to Jawaharlal Nehru's name not finding mention among iconic personalities of the independence movement in President Droupadi Murmu's address, alleging it is part of the continuing campaign to erase India's first prime minister from history. Congress General Secretary (In-charge, Communications) Jairam Ramesh recalled that around midnight on August 14, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his immortal 'tryst with destiny' speech in the Central Hall. "Less known but equally important and illuminating were -- His address to the nation over All India Radio on August 15, 1947, which he began by describing himself as the 'first servant of the Indian people'. His message to the nation, printed in the newspapers on the morning of August 15 1947," Ramesh said. This was also the day on which 14 ministers were sworn in, he further recalled. "Apart from Nehru and Sardar Patel, they were Rajendra Prasad, Maulana Azad, Dr. Ambedkar, Syama Prasad Mookerje

Gujarat govt helping Adani Ports 'secure monopoly', JPC essential: Congress

The Congress on Wednesday reiterated its demand for a joint parliamentary committee into the Adani issue and alleged that the Gujarat government was helping Adani Ports to "secure a monopoly" on the state's port sector. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the Gujarat government grants private ports a 30-year concession period on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) basis, after which ownership gets transferred to the government of Gujarat. On the basis of this model, Adani Ports currently has control over Mundra, Hazira, and Dahej ports, he said. Before the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, Adani Ports requested the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) to extend this concession period by another 45 years to 75 years in total, Ramesh claimed. "This was much beyond the maximum permissible period of 50 years, but the GMB hastened to request the Gujarat Government to do so anyways. The GMB was in such a hurry that it did so without approval from its Board, resulting

Doctor's murder: BJP demands Mamata Banerjee's resignation amid protests

The BJP on Wednesday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of siding with the accused instead of the victim in the case of rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, and demanded her resignation. BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia claimed that no woman in the state will feel safe if she continues as chief minister. "You (Banerjee) did not perform your moral duty. You should immediately resign," he told reporters, alleging that she tried to save the accused of the crime, which has shocked the nation. Bhatia cited the critical comments of the Calcutta High Court about the handling of the case before it transferred the investigation to the CBI, as he addressed the CM as "nirmamta" (pitiless) Banerjee. He expressed confidence that the CBI will ensure a thorough probe and that the guilty are hanged. He said the local police first informed the victim's parents that their daughter was sick and then claimed that she had committed suicide. The parents were made to wait for

BJP office-bearers to meet on Aug 17 for upcoming membership drive launch

The BJP's national office-bearers are expected to meet on August 17 to finalise the launch of the party's membership drive, which will culminate with the election of a new party president. Besides those holding an office in the BJP's organisational team at the national level, the meeting will also be attended by sate party presidents and general secretaries in charge of the party's organisation in different states. There has long been a buzz that the ruling party may appoint a 'working president' before a president is formally elected as the membership drive required to be completed for the election to take place may stretch over six months. With incumbent president J P Nadda joining the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government as a Cabinet minister, he is expected to be replaced as per the party's convention of 'one person one post'. However, unlike 2019, when Nadda had emerged as the obvious successor to Home Minister Amit Shah at the helm of the party after he did not join th

BJP's Sudhanshu Trivedi attacks INDIA bloc for 'covering up' for criminals

The BJP alleged on Tuesday that the recent rise in the political strength of 'do ladke', a reference to Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, has resulted in criminals getting emboldened in Uttar Pradesh. BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi accused the Samajwadi Party of sheltering criminals, and targeted the Yadav-led party over the arrest of two persons allegedly associated with it on the charges of rape and attempt to rape. Not only the SP has been giving "cover fire" to criminals but the members of the opposition INDIA bloc are helping each other defend criminal elements of their alliance partners as well, he told reporters. "Those associated with two boys have been committing crimes. The audacity of criminals has been rising since the increase in the strength of these two boys," he said in an apparent reference to Congress leader Gandhi and Yadav, whose alliance outperformed the BJP-led NDA in Uttar Pradesh in the recent Lok Sabha polls. BJP disregards demand for JPC probe as a sham on Hindenburg allegations

The BJP on Monday rejected the Congress' demand for a JPC probe into Hindenburg's allegation against the SEBI chairperson, saying it is a sham with an eye on weakening the Indian economy and destroying investment in the country. BJP leader and former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad reiterated the party's line that the short-selling firm's charge and the opposition's criticism of the market regulator are part of a wider conspiracy. He told reporters, "After being rebuffed by people, the Congress, its allies and its closest ally in the toolkit gang have conspired together to usher in economic anarchy and instability in India." The 10-year-old rule of the Congress between 2004 and 2014 was marked by several alleged scams, Prasad noted as he questioned why such critical reports were not brought out then. He alleged, "The Congress party leadership is involved in creating economic anarchy based on this fictitious report." He, however, asserted that investors have come to realise the
