State govt has over Rs 1.15 trillion outstanding liabilities: Assam FM

The total outstanding liabilities of the Assam government currently is over Rs 1.15 lakh crore, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog informed the state Assembly on Tuesday, while affirming that the debt to GSDP ratio of the state is within prescribed limits. She also maintained that the government has been repaying debts as per schedule while it has become self-reliant in paying for its salary, pension and loan interest from its own resources. Replying to a question by Independent legislator Akhil Gogoi, Neog said the total outstanding liabilities of the state as on March 31, 2023, is Rs 1,15,751.32 crore. The amount was Rs 82,741.09 crore as on the same day in 2021, she added. She maintained that the debt to GSDP ratio was at 23.47 per cent till 2022-23, which was within the permitted limit of 32 per cent as per the Assam Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Act. MCD introduces cut motion in House, financial powers of Mayor to increase

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Tuesday presented a cut motion in the House meeting proposing amendments in the revised budget estimates 2023-24 which is said to enhance the financial power of Mayor Shelly Oberoi. Leader of House Mukesh Goel presented the cut motion to modify revenue expenditure under various zonal committees and transfer the control of the funds to the mayor. The councillors of the opposition parties objected to the proposed amendments in the budget stating it will dilute the power of the committees and lead to sole control of the mayor on matters related to disbursement of these funds. The BJP and Congress councillors protested against the amendments in the special House meeting at the Civic Centre here called to discuss the budget estimates for 2024-25. According to the amendments document, the civic body has proposed to cut down funds on the property tax department by 102 crore, education department by 52 crore and committees in Central and Zonal offices

Delhi minister and senior AAP leader Atishi on Tuesday said the BJP-led Centre is trying to "scare and silence" the party by conducting ED raids on its leaders. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) searched the premises of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's personal secretary Bibhav Kumar and AAP Rajya Sabha MP and party's treasurer ND Gupta as part of a money laundering case, official sources said. Atishi said raids were being conducted by the ED at the premises of Kumar and Gupta since 7 am. More raids on the premises of other AAP leaders are to be conducted throughout the day, she claimed. The minister also alleged that the statements of witnesses and accused related to the excise policy case were extracted by the probe agency by force and threat. Commending Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for her consistency and focus on growth in her interim Budget, a US-based India-centric business advocacy group has said that it represents a welcome statement of responsible fiscal management in an election year. The US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) also commend the government's continued focus on the trinity of infrastructure, inclusive growth, and fiscal prudence in line with growing US-India commercial ties. Chandigarh mayoral elections: SC appalled by 'defacing' of ballots

Appalled by the alleged defacing of ballot papers in the Chandigarh mayoral polls, the Supreme Court on Monday said this is a mockery of democracy and ordered that the ballots and the video of the electoral proceedings be preserved. Taking note of a plea of an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor alleging wrongdoing in the polls, the court issued notices to the Chandigarh authorities, including the civic body. A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra expressed annoyance after watching the video of the electoral proceedings and said that, prima facie, the returning officer was defacing the ballot papers. Claims Centre not releasing funds 'politically-vitiated narrative': FM

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday came down heavily on allegations that the Centre is withholding funds meant for non-BJP governed states, saying it is a "politically-vitiated narrative" that "vested interests" are happy to go about saying. Replying to a question by Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in the Lok Sabha on the Karnataka government's claim that the Centre is not releasing funds due to it, Sitharaman said such a situation cannot happen as the "system is well placed" and the central government works according to recommendations of the Finance Commission.
