Trump's tough talk might help Mark Carney win full term as Canada's PM

Mark Carney's political career is only months old, and it's already been a roller-coaster ride. The former central banker appeared destined to become one of Canada's shortest-serving prime ministers until President Donald Trump picked a fight with the US's northern neighbour. Carney, who was sworn in on March 14 following Justin Trudeau's resignation and a Liberal Party leadership race, now leads in the polls heading into the April 28 parliamentary elections, marking a dramatic turnaround for a party that seemed headed for a crushing defeat until the American president started attacking Canada's economy and sovereignty almost daily. Trump's trade war and threats to make Canada the 51st state have infuriated Canadians and led to a surge in Canadian nationalism that has helped Liberals flip the election narrative. In a mid-January poll by Nanos, Liberals trailed the Conservative Party by 47% to 20%. In the latest Nanos poll, which was conducted during a three-day period that ended Apr

Easing trade barriers to aid Canada more than US tariffs hurt, says Carney

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday eliminating trade barriers within Canada would benefit Canadians far more than US President Donald Trump can ever take away with his trade war as he made his case to retain power at the last debate ahead of the April 28 vote. Carney has set a goal of free trade within the country's 10 provinces and three territories by July 1. Canada has long had interprovincial trade barriers. "We can give ourselves far more than Donald Trump can ever take away," Carney said We can have one economy. This is within our grasp. Carney said the relationship Canada has had with the US for the past 40 years has fundamentally changed because of Trump's tariffs. If reelected Carney plans to immediately enter into trade walks with the Trump administration. We are facing the biggest crisis of our lifetimes. Donald Trump is trying to fundamentally change the world economy, the trading system, but really is he's trying to break us so the US can own us. They want our la

India strongly trashes Pak Army chief's 'jugular vein' remark on Kashmir

Islamabad's only link with Jammu and Kashmir is the vacation of illegally occupied parts of the Union Territory, India said on Thursday, strongly trashing Pakistan Army Chief Gen Asim Munir's remark that Kashmir is "jugular vein" of his country. New Delhi also rejected Pakistan's assertion that the Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana is a Canadian citizen and it has nothing to do with him. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Pakistan may try very hard but its reputation as the "epicentre" of global terrorism will not diminish. Addressing a conclave of the Overseas Pakistanis in Islamabad on Wednesday, Munir said Pakistan will not forget the issue of Kashmir and will stand by the Kashmiri people in the "struggle against the Indian occupation". "It was our jugular vein, it is our jugular vein, we will not forget it," he said. At his weekly media briefing here, Jaiswal said, "How can anything foreign be in a jugular vein?" "This (Jammu and Kashmir) is

Carney says Trump key issue in Canada election, rival leader demands change

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday the key question in Canada's election is who is best to deal with US President Donald Trump while his Conservative rival argued that Carney doesn't represent change after a decade of Liberal Party rule. Opposition Conservative Pierre Poilievre said during the French-language leaders' debate Canada needs change and Carney is just like his predecessor Justin Trudeau. Mr. Poilievre is not Justin Trudeau. I'm not Justin Trudeau either. In this election the question is who is going to face Mr. Trump," Carney said. Trump's trade war and threats to make Canada the 51st state have infuriated Canadians and led to a surge in Canadian nationalism that has bolstered Liberal Party poll numbers ahead of the April 28 vote. Poilievre is imploring Canadians not to give the Liberals a fourth term. He hoped to make the election a referendum on Trudeau, whose popularity declined toward the end of his decade in power as food and housing prices rose and immigrat

Canadian university teachers warned against non-essential travel to US

The association that represents academic staff at Canadian universities is warning its members against non-essential travel to the United States. The Canadian Association of University Teachers released updated travel advice Tuesday due to the political landscape created by President Donald Trump's administration and reports of some Canadians encountering difficulties crossing the border. The association says academics who are from countries that have tense diplomatic relations with the United States, or who have themselves expressed negative views about the Trump administration, should be particularly cautious about US travel. Its warning is particularly targeted to academics who identify as transgender or whose research could be seen as being at odds with the position of the current U.S. administration. In addition, the association says academics should carefully consider what information they have, or need to have, on their electronic devices when crossing the border, and take .

Indian auto parts makers in Canada, Mexico see no major impact of tariffs

Indian auto component makers having manufacturing facilities in Canada and Mexico will face no significant impact of US President Donald Trump's latest tariff war as the two countries have been exempted from additional duties. Due to the existing order under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) related to fentanyl and migration, the White House confirmed that the new tariffs announced on Wednesday will not apply to Canada and Mexico. Subsequently, US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) compliant goods from both the countries will attract zero duty while non-compliant items will face a 25 per cent tariff. Indian auto component makers such as Samvardhana Motherson International Ltd have already stated that with a significant part of their products being USMCA-compliant, Trump's orders may not have any material impact. "A significant part of the products supplied by the company and/or its subsidiaries to its various customers in the US are either manufactured in the US
