Canada's first astronaut, former Foreign Minister Marc Garneau, dies at 76

The government has eased contiguous land area norms for special economic zones (SEZs) which want to engage exclusively in the manufacturing of semiconductors or electronic components, according to a notification, "Where a Special Economic Zone is exclusively set up for the manufacturing of semiconductors or electronic components, the contiguous land area shall be ten hectares or more," the commerce ministry's notification has said. Earlier, this was 50 hectares. It added that for the purposes of this provision, the electronic components would include display module sub-assembly, camera module sub-assembly, battery sub-assembly, various types of other module sub-assemblies, printed circuit board, Li-ion cells for batteries, mobile and information technology hardware components, hearables and wearables. The notification also said that the Board of Approval (highest decision-making body for SEZs) can relax the condition of encumbrance-free area, in cases where the area is mortgaged or

Canadian wildfire smoke reaches US Midwest, Europe; air 'very unhealthy'

Smoke from Canadian wildfires carried another day of poor air quality south of the border to the Midwest, where conditions in parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan were rated "very unhealthy" on Tuesday. The fires have forced more than 27,000 Canadians in three provinces to flee their homes, and the smoke has even reached Europe. The smell of smoke hung over the Minneapolis-St Paul area on Tuesday morning despite rain that obscured the full measure of the dirty air. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued an alert for almost the entire state into Wednesday, but the Twin Cities area got the worst of it in the Midwest on Tuesday. "As the smoke continues to move across the state Tuesday, air quality will slowly improve from northwest to southeast for the remainder of the alert area," the agency said. "The smoke is expected to leave the state by Wednesday at noon." The Iowa Department of Natural Resources warned that air quality in a band from the state's southwest corner to

Canadian wildfires force evacuation, impact air quality in US border states

More than 25,000 residents in three provinces have been evacuated as dozens of wildfires remained active Sunday and diminished air quality in parts of Canada and the US, according to officials. Most of the evacuated residents were from Manitoba, which declared a state of emergency last week. About 17,000 people there were evacuated by Saturday along with 1,300 in Alberta. About 8,000 people in Saskatchewan had been relocated as leaders there warned the number could climb. Smoke was worsening air quality and reducing visibility in Canada and into some US states along the border. Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour, Saskatchewan's Public Safety Agency warned Sunday. As smoke levels increase, health risks increase. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said ongoing hot, dry weather is allowing some fires to grow and threaten communities, and resources to fight the fires and support the evacuees are ..

Canadian province declares emergency over wildfires as thousands flee

The Canadian province of Manitoba has declared a state of emergency over a series of wildfires, with Prime Minister Mark Carney agreeing to send in the military to help. This is the largest evacuation Manitoba will have seen in most people's living memory, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew said. He said the fires forced 17,000 people across several communities to flee. The military is being called for help here because of the sheer scale of the 17,000 folks that we move relatively quickly. I'm happy to say that Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed to the request, Kinew said. The emergency declaration helps officials to safely transport evacuees and provide shelter. The Manitoba city of Flin Flon earlier ordered all 5,000 residents to leave due to an approaching wildfire. Residents were told they should flee south with their essentials and aim to be out by midnight. It already begun sending out high-needs hospital patients. Everybody has to be out by midnight and that includes me. I'm busy

King Charles warns Canada faces threats as Trump threatens annexation

King Charles III said Canada is facing unprecedented challenges in a world that's never been more dangerous as he opened the Canadian Parliament on Tuesday with a speech widely viewed as a show of support in the face of annexation threats by US President Donald Trump. Trump's repeated suggestion that the US annex Canada prompted Prime Minister Mark Carney to invite Charles to give the speech from the throne outlining his government's priorities for the new session of Parliament. The king is the head of state in Canada, which is a member of the Commonwealth of former colonies. We must face reality: since the Second World War, our world has never been more dangerous and unstable. Canada is facing challenges that, in our lifetimes, are unprecedented," Charles said in French. He added that many Canadians are feeling anxious and worried about the drastically changing world around them." The king said the True North is indeed strong and free and reaffirmed Canada's sovereignty. Trump se

Netanyahu slams UK, France and Canada for opposing military action in Gaza

The UK, France and Canada are threatening concrete actions against Israel, including sanctions, for its activities in Gaza and West Bank. The joint statement on Monday sharply criticizes Israel's decision to allow a limited, basic amount of aid into Gaza after nearly three months of an Israeli blockade wholly inadequate. The statement also calls on Israel to stop its "egregious" new military actions in Gaza and to immediately allow in humanitarian aid. The statement came shortly after Israel and the United Nations said the first few trucks of aid had entered Gaza which the UN humanitarian chief described as a drop in the ocean of what is urgently needed. The three countries' statement said they have always supported Israel's right to defend itself against terrorism but called the escalation disproportionate. The statement marked the first significant threat from the UK and France since the start of the 19-month war.

Canadian PM Carney names Indian-origin Anita Anand as foreign minister

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a major Cabinet shakeup, including naming Indian-origin Anita Anand as the new foreign minister, on Tuesday as he shapes a newly re-elected Liberal government. Carney, who replaced Justin Trudeau earlier this year and won election last month, named Anand foreign minister, replacing Mlanie Joly, who becomes the minister of industry. Anand previously served in roles including defence minister. Franois-Philippe Champagne retains his job as finance minister, while Dominic LeBlanc remains minister of US trade at a time of a trade war between Canada and the United States. Carney won the job of prime minister by promising to confront the aggression toward Canada shown by US President Donald Trump, while preserving the calm demeanour of an economist who has led the central banks of both Canada and the United Kingdom. Canadians elected this new government with a strong mandate to define a new economic and security relationship with the United ..

Canadian prime minister's Liberals fall short of majority in Parliament

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberals celebrated election victory in a stunning turn of fortune but fell short Tuesday of winning an outright majority in Parliament, and the party will have to seek help from other another, smaller party. The vote-counting agency Elections Canada has processed nearly all ballots in what turned out to be a razor-close race that will leave the Liberals three seats short of a majority. Recounts are expected in some districts. Carney's rival, populist Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, was in the lead until US President Donald Trump took aim at Canada with a trade war and threats to annex it as the 51st state. Poilievre not only lost his bid for prime minister Monday but was voted out of the Parliament seat that he held for 20 years. That capped a swift decline in fortunes for the firebrand Poilievre, who a few months ago appeared to be a shoo-in to become Canada's next prime minister and shepherd the Conservatives back into power for the fir
