Chennai needs at least 2,000 km more of modern stormwater drains: Official

Ten days after Cyclone Michuang brought more than 50 cm of rain inundating many parts of Chennai, a senior official of Greater Chennai Corporation said the city needs to add at least 2,000 km more of modern stormwater drains with a higher capacity to handle showers of this magnitude. The city currently has around 2,950 km of drains, most of which have an inadequate handling capacity of 2-5 cm per hour, S Rajendiran, GCC chief engineer for stormwater drains (SWD), told PTI. "Chennai has a road length of 5,500 km. At least 5,000 km of drains with higher capacity are required for the city to handle such heavy rains. New drains coming up in the northern, western and southern parts of the city are being built to handle rain precipitation of 7-8 cm/hour," he said. The Tamil Nadu government on Monday reviewed the oil spillage mitigation works in north Chennai, with the Ennore Creek area suffering from "significant" oil deposits. An Expert Committee had made extensive field visits and concluded that oil spillage had happened from the premises of CPCL entering into Buckingham canal from Guard ponds and Storm Water Drain ponds finally reaching the Ennore Creek. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has issued a notice to the Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) on the matter, an official release said. On Monday, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena chaired a High-Level Committee meeting of the State Oil Spill Crisis Management Group (SOS-CMG) and reviewed the oil spillage mitigation work. Among others, the meeting was attended by top state government officials and those from the Coast Guard and the CPCL, the release said. Automobile manufacturer Tata Motors has launched a service plan to assist customers impacted by cyclone Michaung in Tamil Nadu and parts of Andhra Pradesh. The company has implemented a comprehensive service plan across its range of passengers and electric vehicles. Accordingly, it has extended the standard warranty and annual maintenance contract period for vehicles in the affected region. Tata Motors has also set up a 24x7 helpdesk 1800-209-9292 enabling customers to reach out to them. "The helpline serves as a central hub for emergency assistance offering timely support," a company statement said on Saturday. A dedicated road assistance team has also been established to handle cases, prioritising based on customer call dates and area accessibility. TVS Motor donates Rs 3 crore for cyclone relief work in Tamil Nadu

TVS Motor Company on Saturday said it has donated Rs 3 crore to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to aid relief work in the wake of flooding and damage caused by cyclone Michaung in Tamil Nadu. The money will be used to provide necessary flood relief and support for the communities that have been badly affected by the cyclone, the company said in a statement. "The floods have unleashed severe hardship on the community, and we would like to do our part to support the community," TVS Motor Co Managing Director Sudarshan Venu said. The company said it will also offer additional service support for its customers in the flood-hit districts of Tamil Nadu.

Situation grim in parts of Chennai, suburbs after Michaung bring downpour

Parts of the city and its suburbs in adjoining districts remained water-logged on Thursday, days after Cyclone Michuang brought torrential downpour, paralysing life in the metropolis and its surrounding areas.
