Mudslide kills 2 in China while rain from Khanun cancels some trains

A mudslide caused by torrential rains killed at least two people on the outskirts of Xi'an in western China, an official news agency said Saturday, while some trains in the northeast were cancelled as a powerful storm lashed the region. Rescuers were looking for 16 missing people following Friday evening's mudslide in the village of Luanzhen, the Xinhua News Agency said. It said roads, bridges and power supplies were damaged. Parts of China suffer heavy rains and flooding every summer, but this year has been unusually severe in some areas, while other regions struggle with drought that is damaging crops. Elsewhere, some train services in Shenyang, the biggest city in China's northeast, and surrounding Liaoning province were suspended starting Saturday evening due to heavy rains caused by the remnants of Khanun, state TV reported. Khanun pummeled parts of Japan as a typhoon before weakening over the Korean Peninsula on its way to China. Some 23,000 people were evacuated from the ...

China sends ships and fighter jets toward Taiwan in new show of force

China sent navy ships and a large group of fighter jets toward Taiwan, continuing its military pressure on the island, Taiwan's defense ministry said Thursday. China claims self-ruled Taiwan as its own territory and has regularly sent flights toward the island in reaction to the island's political activities. In the past year, it has also sent navy vessels as well as drones to circle the waters near the island. Taiwan's defense ministry said the Chinese People's Liberation Army sent 33 warplanes and 6 navy vessels between 6 a.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday. The J-10 and J-16 fighter jets flew across the midline and to the southwest of Taiwan. The ministry said in an earlier statement Wednesday that Taiwan's military tracked five of the ships as they sailed in coordination with the flights of the fighter jets. The ministry said it used land-based missile systems to track the aircraft, 10 of which crossed the midline of the Taiwan Strait, an unofficial boundary that had been conside

Death toll in recent Beijing flooding rises to 33, with 18 still missing

The death toll in recent flooding in China's capital rose to 33, including five rescuers, and another 18 people remain missing, officials said Wednesday, as much of the country's north remains threatened by unusually heavy rainfall. Days of heavy rain hit areas in the city's mountainous western outskirts especially hard, causing the collapse of 59,000 homes, damage to almost 150,000 others and flooding of more than 15,000 hectares (37,000 acres) of cropland, according to the city government. Scores of roads were damaged, along with more than 100 bridges, Xia Linmao, a Beijing vice mayor, said at a news conference on Wednesday. The casualty and damage numbers were current as of Tuesday, Xia said, adding that rescue efforts remained underway. Given the level of damage, it could take up to three years to restore full functions, Xia said. Other parts of China have also seen heavy flooding, partly from the impact of Typhoon Doksuri over the weekend, leaving dozens dead and missing. He

China's July exports tumble, add to pressure to shore up flagging economy

China's exports plunged by 14.5 per cent in July compared with a year earlier, adding to pressure on the ruling Communist Party to reverse an economic slump. Exports fell to USD 281.8 billion as the decline widened from June's 12.4 per cent fall, customs data showed Tuesday. Imports tumbled 12.4 per cent from a year earlier to USD 201.2 billion in a sign of weak domestic demand, widening from the previous month's 6.8 per cent contraction. The country's global trade surplus narrowed by 20.4 per cent from a record high a year ago to USD 80.6 billion. Chinese leaders are trying to shore up business and consumer activity after a rebound following the end of anti-virus controls in December fizzled out earlier than expected. Economic growth sank to 0.8 per cent in the three months ending in June compared with the previous quarter, down from the January-March period's 2.2 per cent. That is the equivalent of 3.2 per cent annual growth, which would be among China's weakest in three ...
