EXPLAINER: Why World Bank is under fire over set of rankings

Under fire for allegations that it bowed to pressure from China and other governments, the World Bank has dropped a popular report that ranked countries by how welcoming they are to businesses. The report is important to many companies and investors around the world: They use the World Bank's Doing Business report to help decide where to invest money, open manufacturing plants or sell products. Eager to attract investment, countries around the world, especially developing economies, have sought to improve their rankings in the World Bank's report. Sometimes, nations would pursue substantive policy changes by, for example, making it easier for businesses to pay taxes, obtain loans or enforce contracts. Sometimes, they would take a more aggressive tack: Like pushy high schoolers cajoling a teacher for a higher grade, they would lobby the World Bank to provide a higher score on the Doing Business report Countries that have scored a high ranking have often touted their success. UN chief urges 'rapid' emission cuts to curb climate change

The head of the United Nations called Thursday for immediate, rapid and large-scale cuts in greenhouse gas emissions to curb global warming and avert climate disaster. Ahead of the annual UN General Assembly meeting next week, Antonio Guterres warned governments that climate change is proceeding faster than predicted and fossil fuel emissions have already bounced back from a pandemic dip. Speaking at the launch of a UN-backed report summarizing current efforts to tackle climate change, Guterres said recent extreme weather from Hurricane Ida in the United States to floods in western Europe and the deadly heatwave in the Pacific Northwest showed no country is safe from climate-related disasters. These changes are just the beginning of worse to come," he said, appealing to governments to meet the goals of the 2015 Paris climate accord. Unless there are immediate, rapid and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, we will be unable to limit global heating to 1.5 degrees ..

Significant R&D investment required as part of climate action: Yadav

Significant research and development investment, particularly from developed economies of Europe is required to decarbonise energy as a part of climate action in developing countries, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said on Tuesday. Speaking at a session on 'Future of Sustainable Technologies in India-Europe Partnerships' organised by FICCI LEADS 2021 event on the theme 'Future of Partnerships', Yadav said that in any climate action, clean energy derived especially from renewable energy plays a vital role. "We need to bring together the power of innovation across the world, with significant R&D investment, in particular, from developed economies of Europe. This would enable us to solve the challenge of decarbonising energy, as well as cement and steel, in a manner that is low on cost and allows for rapid deployment in developing economies," he said.
