World Cup: In touch with medical panel - Sri Lanka on Delhi air pollution

As uncertainty surrounds their World Cup match against Bangladesh owing to the toxic air condition here, Sri Lankan cricket team manager Mahinda Halangoda said on Sunday that they are in touch with a medical panel and will abide by the decision of International Cricket Council (ICC) with regards to the game on Monday. Halangoda, however, clarified that Sri Lanka have not pleaded with the ICC for a change of venue for Monday's match. "We are constantly in touch with our medical panel back in Sri Lanka. Actually, the professor who is in charge is already in India. He had come for a conference and we are in touch with him through the team doctor. "Definitely we will be looking at the index. But obviously, we will be guided by the ICC and I think they have a medical panel here and, so, they will be giving us instructions. "Today when we came, we were told to wear masks. But it depends on what the outside index is, and then we'll make a call on it," said Halangonda. The Lankan team was

World Cup 2023: Sri Lanka cancel training in "severely" polluted Delhi

Sri Lanka cancelled their opening training session in the national capital on Saturday due to "severe" air pollution but Bangladesh braved the adverse weather conditions to train, a day after choosing to skip their practice session. Bangladesh, who arrived here on Wednesday, had decided against practising on Friday as the pollution levels in the city hit the "severe plus" category. Sri Lanka followed them into staying indoors on Saturday when the Air Quality Index stood at 407 in the morning. "It was cancelled owing to the air quality issue," said a SLC source, referring to the Saturday's training session. However, Bangladesh players, wearing masks, came out for practice at the Feroz Shah Kotla. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe". It is unlikely that the International Cricket Council (ICC) will shift the game out of Delhi but the call on whether t

Air purifier sales surge as air quality worsens in national capital

Air purifier makers are witnessing a sudden spike in sales and customer enquiries amid air quality worsening in the national capital and adjoining areas. The makers said they are receiving queries from Mumbai and some eastern parts of the country, alongside the New Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR), where air quality levels have also gone down substantially. Companies such as Philips, Kent RO, Xiaomi, Daikin and Havells expect a further uptick in demand in the coming days, as they anticipate air quality to be impacted by other reasons as well as from construction activities, along with rising health consciousness among consumers. Air purifiers are a relatively new, small and niche segment in the home appliances space, whose demand picks up after Diwali. However, this year has seen an early surge in sales due to a sudden surge in air pollution levels, companies said. "In the past 4-5 days, we have witnessed a 15-20 per cent increase in demand, as people anticipated the need for a

Delhi LG holds meeting on air pollution, departments to issue advisories

Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena held a meeting with Environment Minister Gopal Rai amid severe air pollution in the city on Friday, in which a decision was taken to appeal neighbouring states, particularly Punjab, to check paddy stubble burning. The meeting also decided to adopt interim measures such as issuing advisories by the Environment department asking people, especially children and the elderly, to take extra care and remain indoors as far as possible, preparedness by the Health department and optimal use of mechanised road sweepers, water sprinklers and anti-smog guns. The meeting chaired by the LG could not be attended by the chief minister who was out of Delhi, according to a Raj Niwas statement. After the meeting, Rai told reporters that he urged the LG for issuing directions to senior officers to not "boycott" the government and attend meetings and remain cooperative and active for implementation of the decisions on the ground. "I also urged for action against the

Delhi air pollution: Centre defers stricter curbs, says AQI declining

The central government on Friday deferred implementation of stricter measures under the final stage of the air pollution control plan, saying curbs under Stage III were implemented only a day ago and the air quality index in Delhi-NCR is already showing a declining trend. Delhi's 24-hour average air quality index stood at 468 on Friday which falls in the "severe plus" category, a stage at which all emergency measures, including a ban on polluting trucks, commercial four-wheelers, and all types of construction, are mandated to be initiated and enforced in the National Capital Region. These measures constitute the final stage of the Graded Response Action Plan and should ideally be activated at least three days prior to the Air Quality Index surpassing the 450-mark in the capital, as outlined in a policy document prepared by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). However, during a review meeting, the CAQM decided to monitor the air pollution situation for a day or more befo
