7th Delhi Assembly met for 74 days over 5 yrs, lowest number till now: PRS

The 7th Delhi Assembly convened for just 74 days over its five-year term, the lowest number compared to all previous assemblies, according to a report by the think tank PRS Legislative Research. The report states that the assembly sessions were called every year and divided into several parts. Within each year, sessions were adjourned without prorogation and were divided into parts. This resulted in the House meeting for only one or two days on several occasions, the report said. While the Lieutenant Governor summons and prorogues sessions, it is the Speaker who calls for sittings during a session, the report added. The first session of the 7th Delhi Assembly began on February 20, 2020, and was prorogued on March 3, 2021, after being held in five parts. The second session commenced on March 3, 2021, and was prorogued on March 8, 2022, after four parts. Ahead of the February 5 Assembly elections in Delhi, several block-level leaders and workers from the Congress and BJP on Saturday joined the Aam Aadmi Party in the presence of Chief Minister Atishi. Delhi riots accused Tahir Hussain filed his nomination papers from the Mustafabad constituency on Thursday and returned to Tihar Jail, officials said. The former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor is the candidate of Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) from Mustafabad for the February 5 assembly polls. 101 farmers to resume Delhi march from Shambhu border on Jan 21: Pandher

A group of 101 farmers will resume on January 21 their march to Delhi from the Shambhu border point to press the government to accept their demands, including a legal guarantee for minimum support price for crops, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said on Thursday. The "jatha" (group) of 101 farmers earlier made three attempts to head towards Delhi on foot on December 6, December 8 and December 14, last year at the Shambhu border. Delhi polls: Cong releases list of 15 candidates, replaces Gokalpur nominee

The Congress Tuesday released a list of 15 candidates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls, fielding former Union minister Krishna Tirath from Patel Nagar and councillor Ariba Khan from Okhla. The party also replaced its candidate in the Gokalpur (SC) constituency, fielding Ishwar Bagri in place of Pramod Kumar Jayant. With this list, the Congress has declared a total of 63 candidates for the elections for the 70-member Delhi Assembly. Delhi polls: BJP focuses on intensive outreach in 30 Dalit-dominated seats

The BJP is hopeful of "markedly improving" its performance in Dalit-dominated constituencies of the city on the basis of a sustained and focussed outreach campaign spread over months ahead of the February 5 assembly polls, party leaders said. The party failed to win even one of the 12 SC (scheduled castes) reserved constituencies in the assembly polls held in 2015 and 2020. In previous elections too, the BJP never won more than two-three of these seats. There are 30 assembly constituencies in Delhi, including 12 reserved for SC candidates, in which the Dalit community voters range from 17 to 45 per cent, according to Delhi BJP leaders. Delhi polls: BJP faces protest, threat from MLA over ticket distribution

Resentment surfaced on Sunday over ticket distribution for Delhi Assembly polls in the BJP, with a protest held outside its Delhi unit office and angry outburst by the outgoing MLA from Kaarwal Nagar who was not included in the candidates list. A group of protesters from Tughlakabad in South Delhi held a dharna at the gate of Delhi BJP office, demanding a change in the candidate from the constituency. Light rain in Delhi as city records low of 7.7 degrees Celsius: IMD

Light rain was witnessed in parts of Delhi on Saturday evening as the city recorded a low of 7.7 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department. Forty-five trains were delayed as a thick layer of fog engulfed the city in the morning, reducing visibility which impacted train operations, officials said. The maximum temperature settled as 17 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average, the IMD said. Parts of the national capital, including the Central Delhi area, received light rain. According to the weather department, Safdarjung observed minimum visibility of 50 metre from 12.30 am to 1.30 am which improved thereafter becoming 200 metre and continues to remain so 7.30 am.
