Guj: Cong demands strict enforcement of fire safety norms
Leader of Opposition in the Gujarat Assembly Paresh Dhanani on Monday called for strict enforcement of fire safety norms, in view of the blaze that killed 22 students at a coaching institute in Surat. The Congress leader demanded that the state government conduct a thorough probe into the Surat fire tragedy, and said they will raise the issue of fire safety during the monsoon session of the state Assembly. "We will ask the government to ensure strict implementation of fire safety norms in all schools, coaching classes, hospitals, commercial buildings and hotels across the state," Dhanani told PTI over phone. He said the civic bodies need to monitor and carry out regular inspections of these premises and the ones failing to comply with fire safety regulations should be closed. The National Weather Service says a tornado touched down in the Tulsa area early Sunday, damaging structures, uprooting trees and toppling power lines. Pete Snyder with the weather service said Sunday that officials had confirmed that a tornado caused damage in the Tulsa suburb of Sapulpa and surrounding areas. Snyder says crews are assessing the damage to determine the tornado's strength. He says the area also experienced damage from straight-line winds that officials say exceeded 129 kilometers per hour. 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Peru leaves 1 dead, 11 injured
At least one person was killed and 11 others sustained injuries after a powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck northern Peru on Sunday morning.Peru's National Emergency Operations Center reported the death of Dario Munoz, 48, a resident of San Ignacio town in country's northwest region of Cajamarca. He died after a boulder tumbled onto his house, reports Xinhua.According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 2:41 pm (local time), was at an approximate depth of 105 kilometres.Ricardo Seijas, the head of emergency operations centre, said that about 130 buildings, including three schools and six clinics or hospitals, were damaged as a result of the quake.The powerful quake was also felt in the neighbouring countries of Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil and Bolivia.Peru is situated on the 'Ring of Fire', an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean which is vulnerable to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
5 family members die in road mishap on way to airport in Bengaluru
Five members of a family died on Monday morning after the vehicle they were travelling in met with a road accident at Airport Road here.The deceased have been identified as Dimpak Dey (46), Swagatha Chaudhary (42), Sujay (45), Jayathi (65) and Dhruva Dey (14).They met with an accident at 3:30 am in the morning when the family was on its way to drop Sujoy and Subhash to the airport. Strong 8.0-magnitude earthquake jolts Peru
A powerful 8.0-earthquake toppled houses, blocked roads and knocked out power in parts of Peru on Sunday, killing one person and injuring at least 26 others as the shockwave extended into neighboring Ecuador. At least 30 people died and dozens more were missing on Sunday after a boat accident on a lake in western Democratic Republic of Congo, a local mayor said. One dead, three missing after cargo ship sinks off Japan
One crew member was killed and three were missing after a steel-carrying cargo ship sank following an overnight collision with another ship off Japan, the Coast Guard and local media reported. Japan-flagged cargo ships Senshomaru and Sumihomaru collided around 2:10 am Sunday (1710 GMT Saturday) in Pacific waters off Chiba prefecture, local Coast Guard official Hiromitsu Kawaguchi told AFP. Air Asia flight makes emergency landing after threat call
A Kolkata-bound Air Asia flight from Bagdogra made an emergency landing at the city airport Sunday evening after a threat call was received at the airlines' office at Bengaluru airport, a senior official said. The aeroplane carrying 179 passengers and six crew members was cordoned off for safe landing at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport here. Man, sister die in road accident
A 22-year-old man and his sister were killed in a road accident in the district on Sunday, police said. Sandeep Singh and his cousin Sonali (20) were on their way to Dholpur from Badi on a motorcycle when a speeding car hit their vehicle. Sonali died on the spot while Sandeep succumbed to injuries on way to the district hospital, police said.

A 46-year-old woman, who had sustainedserious injuries in an LPG cylinder blast in suburban Jogeshwari,died during treatment Sunday, police said. Shakuntala Kagal, admitted to the civic-run Kasturba Hospital, died around 9 am, an official said. She was among 15 persons injured in an LPG cylinder blast at Hanuman chawl in Behram Baug area of Jogeshwari Tuesday. Nine of the injured are undergoing treatment at various hospitals while five were discharged, he said.

Vadodara Municipal Corporation Commissioner Ajay Bhadoo Sunday said the civic body planned to carry out the first ever fire audit in the city for which experts from the Delhi-based Institution of Fire Engineers will be brought in.
