Ten killed, 73 injured in Turkey train derailment: state TV

Ten people were killed and 73 injured today when a train derailed in northwest Turkey, sate-run TRT Haber television said, quoting the health ministry. The train, with 360 people on board, was travelling from Kapikule on the Bulgarian border to Istanbul when six of its carriages derailed in the Tekirdag region. Over 100 ambulances have been sent to the scene, TRT Haber said.

Orthopaedics discuss guidelines for treatment of trauma victims

The Delhi Orthopaedic Association today organised a day-long conference here during which experts from across India tried to chalk out guidelines to ensure better treatment and care to people injured in mishaps. Trauma claims a life in India every 2 minutes. In medical parlance, it refers to physical injury but is not confined to only injuries suffered in road accidents. According to a report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, more than 1.5 lakh people die every year in road accidents, which means 17 people die every hour. Another five lakh are severely injured in road crashes, it said. The number of people killed in road accidents in India is the second-highest globally. Road crashes account for more than 44 per cent of all un-natural accidental deaths in India and 51 per cent of those killed are between 18 and 30 years of age. 1 killed, 9 injured after car falls into gorge in HP

A 29-year-old woman was killed and nine people were injured today after their car fell into a 100-metre-deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district, police said. The accident took place near the Murari Mata temple where they were going to offer prayers, they said. The victims, belonging to Bilaspur, were members of the same family, police said. The injured were admitted to the Civil Hospital in Sundernagar, they said It is suspected that the car fell into the gorge after the driver lost control over the vehicle, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sundernagar, Taranjeet Singh said. The car's driver fled the spot after the accident. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, Singh said.

Indian-origin truck driver arrested for crash that killed 16 people in Canada

A 29-year-old Indian-origin truck driver in Canada has been arrested in connection with a bus crash that killed 16 people, mostly members of a junior hockey team, one of the worst disasters in the country's sporting community. The driver, Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, was arrested at his home in Calgary city on Friday and remanded into custody, the CBC reported, quoting the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the national police force of the country. Sidhu is facing 16 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and 13 counts of dangerous operation of motor vehicle causing bodily injury, the CBC reported. Assam flood situation improves, Lakhimpur district worst affected

The overall flood situation in Assam improved today, although about 24,000 people are still reeling under the deluge in four districts, an official report said. According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 23,600 people were affected by the flood in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath and Nagaon districts, as against 41,000 people in five districts of the state yesterday. The report issued today stated that Lakhimpur is the worst affected district, with over 21,200 people affected, followed by Dhemaji where around 1,200 people were reeling under the deluge. Currently, 29 villages are inundated and 959 hectares of crop areas have been damaged, the ASDMA said. The total number of people losing their lives in the first wave of flood this year in different parts of the state stands at 33, including three in landslides. Rain forecast: Minister asks officialsto be on high alert

Karnataka Minister U T Khader has directed government officials to be on high alert as heavy rain has been forecast in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district till July 11. 11 students caught in flash floods in Bhavani river, rescued

Eleven college students, caught in flash floods while bathing in the Bhavani river in nearby Mettupalayam have been rescued, police said today. The incident occurred when students of a private engineering college went there last evening. They did not notice that the water level had risen following rains and release of excess water from the Bhavani dam, and were trapped in flash floods, they said. Unable to get to safety they contacted police for help, who in turn informed Fire and rescue department. 11 killed, over 40 injured in three road accidents in Rajasthan

Eleven persons were killed and 42 injured in three separate road accidents in Rajasthan's Ajmer, Bikaner and Sirohi districts today. Eight persons, including a minor, were killed and 20 others injured when a bus collided with a dumper on Beawar road in Ajmer, police said. The accident occurred near Tabiji area under Mangaliawas police station area, they said. SP, Ajmer, Rajendra Singh said the state roadways bus was on its way to Jaipur from Pali when the collision occurred. A World War II bomb found on the premises of automaker Volkswagen in the German city of Wolfsburg has been defused after some 4,000 people were evacuated from the surrounding area. City authorities said on Twitter that the bomb was defused today lunchtime. Mumbai reels under torrential rain, bridge closed for traffic
